IF I COULD ONLY BUY FIVE POWER TOOLS… Here’s what I’d buy!

Whether you’ve been thinking about starting out with DIY and don’t know where to start, want to build up your tool collection after you’ve invested in one or two, or have just bought a doer-upper and don’t know what you need to get stuck in, here’s 5 power tools I would recommend everyone have in their tool box to cover the majority of projects you may come across.

For beginners especially, I’d recommend the following brands - WORX UK - Power & Garden Tools, Ryobi Tools UK, BLACK+DECKER UK and ROI, Erbauer/Titan(B&Q own brands), Einhell UK&IE and Evolution Power Tools - UK.

However when it comes to accessories like blades, drill bits etc, it’s worth spending a little more on the trade quality brands. Sandpaper can be bought cheap from Amazon, and I get the majority of my nails and screws from Screwfix and Toolstation.

Any questions on any tools, or if you want my actual product recommendations and links, drop me a DM! If you think another tool belongs on this list, pop it in the comments!

Make sure you save this for later and send it to a fellow DIYer who doesn’t know where to start 🙌🏼

A Combi Hammer Drill is a must have for any DIYer. Usually I’d say you need one of these AND an impact driver, but you can survive with just the one. The Combi Hammer side of things allows you to drill through tough materials like concrete and brick, while also being a great screwdriver. Make sure you go brushless and see what number the torque settings (the numbers around the chuck) go up to. The higher the number, the more torque it has. Two speed drills are also the preference as these can help the drill bits melt through solid materials without much resistance.

Brad Nailers.. they come in 15,16,18 and 21 gauge which is just referring to the thickness of the nails it fires. These are all finish nailers and are used for attaching moulding, joining wood, panelling, installing skirting and architrave etc and the size of the nail gun needed greatly depends on what you’re looking to do.

If you’re doing mostly panelling and fine mouldings, the higher the gauge (thinner the nail) the better as the heads of the nail are tiny and easy

8 YEARS OF DIY HAS TAUGHT ME A LOT

Aside from the obvious of gaining confidence with tools in that time, being able to tackle bigger and more complex projects, and knowing when NOT to DIY, there are a few things i’ve learnt the hard way too..

If there was one piece of advice you could pass on to someone else wanting to get into DIY, what would it be?

🚰 HOW TO CHANGE A KITCHEN TAP🚰

Beginner DIY Plumbing 101 - a job so easy, my 4-year-old did it.. even with that MESS of a pipe situation!

If you need to upgrade your tap, there’s no need to hire in a plumber, when it just takes 10 minutes, a flathead screwdriver and a wrench to do it yourself 💪🏽

Our tap was covered in limescale and reached a point where the whole thing was moving instead of just the spout, so time for an upgrade! While we were doing that, I thought what better time than to install the (previously gifted) I had sitting on the side for months 🤭

A little info about them if you’re interested… the pod 2 (blue) filters out chlorine, THMs, microplastics and lead and then the fluoride filter (red) removes just that.. flourish, making drinking water safer and take up basically no space under the sink. They’re super easy to install yourself too, just hooking up your mains cold inlet to your tap.

Theo was super keen to help with this upgrade, bless him, and loves helping out but it proves simple jobs like this don’t need to be intimidating or require a plumber, though he did cost me a lot in snacks!

Comment TAP and I’ll send you the links to my kitchen tap and water2 filters 💬

Would you do this yourself? Or do you need my little plumbers number? 😅

WTF IS… DIY RENO EDITION

As someone who’s permanently living in my own self-inflicted DIY renovation chaos… I do have some questions.

WTF is: finishing a room? a tidy workshop? Just one trip to B&Q? saying no to another project?

These all seem like myths to me!

Can you relate?… what other myths belong in this list? I’ll do a Part 2!
