𝗜𝗧’𝗦 𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗘! 🎉

My new website is finally live! ✨

And honestly… getting it here was quite the journey.

There were a few hurdles along the way. A LOT of things I still don’t really understand. 😂
There was much use of AI coaching me through what on earth I was supposed to do, connecting domains, adjusting DNS records, and several calls back and forth with my domain provider and website host trying to work out why things weren’t quite doing what they were supposed to.
But… I got there.
And I did it 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝘆 𝗺𝘆𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳. 🙌🏼
I’m actually pretty proud of that.
It might not be the fanciest website in the world, but it feels very me… and for someone who would much rather be painting than figuring out DNS records, I’m calling this a win. 😂
So, if you fancy having a little look around, my new home on the internet is now officially open. 🤍

I’ll have lots of my work on display, and there’ll be plenty of time to have a look around, chat, and hopefully enjoy a little bit of art and creativity.
I’ll also have some creative resources to take home, and ceramicist Mirta Vargas will be joining me with her beautiful handmade ceramics.
If you’re around, I’d love to see you. 🤍
And if you can’t make it tomorrow, you can always have a little nose around the new website instead!

I wasn’t planning to post this today.

But I read something yesterday that really hit home.

The writer put into words something about being a doctor that I recognised on a very personal level. I found myself thinking, yes. This. This is what people don’t always see.

So yesterday being 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀, I felt I had to share it.

In the UK, 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀.

Su***de remains the 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝟱𝟬.

Just let those statistics sit with you for a moment.

For those of us in healthcare, it is sadly not unusual to have known a colleague who has died by su***de. Yesterday was a day to acknowledge and remember those people.

This isn’t a new problem. But I do think we’re getting better at talking about it.

Yesterday, I shared a post about medicine and art, and about seeing the 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹, 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗼.

People have so many opinions about doctors.

They see the appointment, the prescription, the referral, the waiting time, but so much of what being a doctor actually involves happens beneath the surface.

The things you carry home. The decisions you replay. The conversations you remember. The responsibility. The emotional weight of caring for people while trying to keep everything else in your own life going too.

So much of it is unseen. And often misunderstood.

I’m not sharing this for sympathy. I’m sharing it because I think it’s important that people understand there is a 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿.

So perhaps ask your doctor how they’re doing and give them the space to answer.

Because you never really know what someone is carrying.

And sometimes, one question can matter more than we realise.

Read the article. It really made me stop and think, and I hope it might do the same for you. 🤍

𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲 & 𝗔𝗿𝘁

For much of my life, medicine and art have existed side by side.

Medicine became my profession. Art became something I lost for a while, before finding my way back to it.

As a doctor, I’ve always felt privileged to connect with people in a very human way. Coming back to art has made me realise that it can create that same sense of connection.

I used to think of the two as separate parts of my life. Now I see how intertwined they are.

Perhaps my creative mind allows me to notice things that might otherwise go unseen… in people, in places, in the spaces between things.

Both medicine and art have taught me to look a little closer.

So much of the human condition rests on how we feel inside. What we carry with us can influence how we behave, how we connect and how we move through the world.

And art has its own way of reaching that place.
It can make us feel. Stir something up. Bring back a memory. Surface something we didn't realise was there. Sometimes it can even be cathartic... giving something inside us a way out.

In some ways, that reminds me of sharing your worries with another human being. Sometimes simply being seen, heard or given space can change how something feels.

Perhaps that is another connection between medicine and art.

There is a human being beyond the clinical, just as there is a whole person beyond the job we do.

I create to lose myself in the process. To quiet the noise. To make space to pause, focus and feel.

And perhaps the art I create can give someone else that same feeling…

A moment to pause.
To feel.
To remember.
Or simply to be. 🤍

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲! 🎨

The 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗵𝗮𝗺 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼𝘀 guidebooks have arrived, and seeing my name in there has made it all feel very real!

If you’re not familiar with Birmingham Open Studios, it’s the city’s biggest art trail, with artists and creative groups across Birmingham opening their studios and spaces to the public over two weekends.

This year, 𝟭𝟲𝟭 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝟴𝟰 𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘀 are taking part, making it a brilliant opportunity to explore the incredible creativity happening right here in our city.

And I’ll be one of them! 🤍

I’ll be exhibiting alongside .vargas , whose beautiful hand-built stoneware and earthenware ceramics draw inspiration from her native Northern Chile, the Atacama Desert and Inca culture. 🏺

We’ll both be there with our work, so come and have a chat, see what we’ve been creating, or simply have a nosey! And if something catches your eye, you might even find a piece of art to take home. 🤍

I’ll also have 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 (𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀!) to have a play with, because I really believe art should be accessible to everyone.

And Open Studios is about so much more than visiting one artist. It’s a chance to explore Birmingham’s creative scene, discover something unexpected and support local artists.
So grab a guidebook, pick a few venues and go exploring! 🎨

You can find all the details, including where to pick up your 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 and download the 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽, on the Birmingham Open Studios website.

𝗦𝗼, 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝘁? 🤍

When I first came back to painting, it was really just for me.

After years of putting so much of myself into work, family and the everyday chaos of life, I needed somewhere I could be quiet.

Somewhere I could breathe, focus and lose myself in something completely separate from everything else.

Art became that space for me.

But something I never expected happened when I started sharing my work.

People began telling me what they saw in my paintings. A place that reminded them of somewhere they had travelled. A colour that brought back a memory. A feeling they couldn't quite put into words.

And I realised that perhaps this is what I am searching for when I paint too.

The little moments of beauty. The glimmers of light. The places, memories and feelings that remind us that even when the world feels overwhelming or doesn't quite make sense, there is still so much beauty to be found.

I'm not trying to make grand statements with my paintings.

I think I'm simply trying to notice the light.
And hopefully, in some small way, share it with other people too. 🤍

That's what I want my art to be about.

𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀. 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀. 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

And those little glimmers that make life feel meaningful. 🤍

𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁.For a long time, I didn’t really feel l...

𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁.

For a long time, I didn’t really feel like I had the right to.

I have no formal art training. I already have a profession. Art started as something I did simply because I loved it.

And somewhere along the way, I absorbed the idea that perhaps it was just a hobby. Something I could enjoy, but shouldn’t necessarily take too seriously.

That perhaps I needed 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Permission to call myself an artist.
Permission to give it my time.
Permission to take my work seriously.
And even permission to earn money from something I love.

But I’m slowly letting go of that.

Because I’m realising I don’t need permission.

𝗠𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲.

And I know that not just because I believe in it, but because I’ve been lucky enough to see how deeply some of my work has connected with the people who have bought it.

Paintings have gone to homes and people have found something of themselves, a memory, a place or a feeling in them.

And that means an enormous amount to me.
So this is me, stepping out from behind the name and putting my own name to my work.

𝗗𝗿 𝗞𝗿𝘂𝗽𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹 𝗦𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗵.

Artist. GP. Mum. Recovering perfectionist 😂. And someone who is finally beginning to realise that I don’t have to choose between the different parts of myself.

I’ve been pretty quiet over the summer… partly working, partly keeping the kids entertained and partly just taking a bit of a step back.

But I’m ready to get going again.

I’ve got a rebrand to sort, new work to create, a website to somehow build from scratch despite knowing very little about building websites 🙈, and 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗵𝗮𝗺 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼𝘀 to get ready for.

I’m taking part in one of the four dates this year, and I have A LOT to do over the next few weeks!

I’d love you to follow along as I figure it all out and hopefully bring this next chapter to life.

Here’s to a new chapter. 🥂🤍
