Statement stairs & bold runners... I'm here for it!

I've had so many clients asking about stair runners recently that I thought I'd share a little inspiration.

Your staircase is often the first thing people see when they enter your home, so why not make it a feature?

There are so many ways to add personality. Think painted treads and risers, contrasting spindles, bold patterned runners, colourful borders, decorative whipping or beautifully stained timber. The possibilities really are endless.

My biggest piece of advice? Be strategic.

Choose one element to take the lead and allow the others to support it. A vibrant runner might be all you need. Alternatively, painted spindles could become the focal point while the runner remains beautifully understated. Layering too many bold ideas together can quickly feel overwhelming, whereas a considered approach creates a look that feels confident, balanced and timeless.

As with any aspect of interior design, it's all about responding to the character of your home and creating something that feels authentic to the space.

🐾 Meet my co-pilot... Forrest!

If you haven't met her already, this is Forrest – Chief Morale Officer at Khaya Studio. 🤍

She occasionally joins me on site visits and takes her supervisory role very seriously, making sure everything is progressing exactly as planned (usually from the comfiest spot in the room!).

She's also rather partial to a fuss from clients, enjoys inspecting deliveries, and has some very strong opinions on upholstery fabrics... although I suspect her decisions are based more on which one looks cosiest for an afternoon nap! 😂

Running an interior design studio means no two days are ever the same, and it's always a little brighter when Forrest gets to come along for the ride. 🐶

As I look ahead to the rest of the year, I'm feeling incredibly thankful.

It's been a fantastic year so far, with exciting installations taking place almost every month until Christmas, and I'm already working with clients to plan projects for 2027.

Running a small business is a privilege, and I never take for granted the trust my clients place in me. Being invited into someone's home and helping shape the way they live is something I genuinely love.

A huge thank you to my wonderful clients for trusting me with your homes and your vision. Thank you to my talented suppliers, skilled craftspeople and brilliant installation teams, whose expertise brings every design to life. I simply couldn't do what I do without you.

And finally, thank you to everyone who follows along, likes, comments, shares my work or recommends Khaya Studio to family and friends. Every bit of support, no matter how small it may seem, helps my business grow and means more than you probably realise.

One of the questions I'm often asked is, "Do you pass on your trade discounts?"

The answer is yes.

As an interior designer, I've invested years in building relationships with trusted suppliers and opening trade accounts with brands that don't always sell directly to the public. These accounts often provide access to exclusive products, better availability and preferential pricing.

Of course, working with an interior designer is about much more than trade discounts. It's about knowing which products will stand the test of time, selecting the right materials, avoiding costly mistakes, coordinating deliveries and ensuring every piece works together as part of a cohesive scheme.

The trade discounts are simply an added bonus.

My aim is always to help clients achieve the very best result for their budget, creating homes that feel considered, timeless and beautifully put together.

Great interior design begins with the building itself.

Through our portfolio, you'll notice that no two projects look alike - and that's entirely intentional.

A country farmhouse in Somerset demands a different approach to a contemporary new-build home. Likewise, an impressive Coach House calls for a very different design response to a Victorian terrace.

Is it time to move beyond the classic shaker door?

Don't get me wrong – shaker cabinetry is a timeless choice for good reason. But it's certainly not the only option when it comes to bespoke fitted furniture.

I'm seeing some beautiful reinterpretations that add character, texture and individuality without compromising on longevity. From fluted detailing and reeded glass to sculptural profiles, seamless finger pulls and rich timber veneers, there's so much scope to create something truly unique.

One of my current projects features a mid-century inspired wall of cabinetry in stunning burl veneer, with the grain flowing continuously across the entire length of the room. It's going to be a real showstopper, and I honestly can't wait to share the finished result with you!

The beauty of bespoke joinery is that it can be designed specifically for your home, responding to the architecture, your lifestyle and the overall feel you want to create. That's where the magic happens.

Engineered Wood Flooring: The Pros & Cons

Engineered wood flooring has become one of the most popular flooring choices for modern homes - and for good reason. But like any material, it's important to understand both the advantages and limitations before making a decision.

✔️ **Pros**

* Suitable for use with underfloor heating
* More stable than solid wood when temperatures and humidity fluctuate
* Available in a wide range of finishes and plank sizes
* Can offer the warmth and character of real timber
* Often more cost-effective than solid hardwood flooring

✖️ **Cons**

An ottoman is one of my favourite ways to make a living room feel instantly more cosy and inviting ✨

Not only do they provide a practical place to rest your feet, but they can also help soften a room by introducing texture, shape and an extra layer of comfort.

For an effortlessly styled look, simply add a decorative tray, a small stack of beautiful books and perhaps a candle or vase of seasonal flowers. Voila! A functional piece of furniture becomes a focal point that encourages you to slow down, relax and enjoy the space.

It's often these small finishing touches that elevate a room from simply looking nice to feeling truly lived in and welcoming.

A simple, peaceful guest bedroom designed with longevity in mind.

For this guest bedroom at our Blossom Drive project, the aim was to create a calm and welcoming retreat that felt soft, elegant and easy to live with.

A gentle blush pink was chosen for the walls, bringing warmth and character to the space without overwhelming it. To ensure the scheme remains timeless and adaptable, we kept the furniture, upholstery and accessories largely neutral. This approach allows the room to evolve easily over time, whether through changing artwork, cushions, throws or decorative accessories.

I often encourage clients to invest in the elements that are more difficult to change - such as flooring, furniture and joinery - while using paint and styling to introduce personality. It creates flexibility while still delivering a cohesive and considered design.

The result is a serene guest bedroom that feels restful, inviting and effortlessly timeless.
