It’s a bittersweet time of the year! The flowers have mainly finished. Now for a time of prepping and planning for the new season. This is the joy of working seasonally. When the plants have a down time I don’t though!! I’m busy planting bulbs, sowing hardy annuals, lifting Dahlias and planning for the new year. Autumn is such a busy time of year!! 🍁

Welcome to my bug Hotel! This is inspired by my trip to Yeo Valley Organic Garden Festival a couple of weeks ago. I had some old hazel around the patch that I was thinking of discarding but I’ve built this and put it to better use. It reminded me of being young and playing Kerplunk (where you pull sticks out of a barrel and the marbles fall down) anyone remember that game? I built the wigwam first and then threaded the sticks in one by one until a safe and sturdy structure was born. Hopefully all my spiders, ants, beetles will now move in and over winter. It was such a mindful process!🪲 🐞

Some more new varieties I’ve grown this year and my verdict. I like them if they dry well or perform well in a bouquet or thrive in our weather conditions. I don’t like them if they don’t grow strongly and are prone to pests or don’t cut well.

A wonderful day at Yeo Valley Garden Festival. Some amazing talks from Francis Tophill, Arit Anderson and Chris Hull. Conversations about pollinators, connection through gardening and gardening in the future as the climate changes. The Bee safari was great. I learnt loads about solitary Bees and Bumble bees including how they make sleeping bags for their larvae. Have the Bee book by Jean Vernon to sink my teeth into over the weekend ☕️.

I’ve grown ten varieties of flowers this year that I really enjoyed growing. They were easy to germinate and raise coped well with the heat and looked great in my bouquets. Here are the first five. The second five will appear in a post later in the week. Why not try growing these in the spring!
