In June this year a large swarm arrived at a newly installed Eco Tree Hive in an old oak tree in Surrey. However it seemed to prefer establishing its nest space outside of the hive, open to the elements. Unbelievably it has been there for 4 months. As you can see the number of bees are dwindling, part of the life cycle of a colony as winter approaches. It will be interesting to see what happens from here....???

In 2017, at the start of my beekeeping journey, I was fortunate enough to participate in a log hive making workshop at the Dartington Hall estate in Devon, led by Jonathan Powell from the NBKT.Having just completed a conventional beekeeping course, it was my love of working with wood that initially....

MAPLE FARM, ROSEMARY LANE, ALFOLD GU6 8EZ - REFRESHMENTS PROVIDED
(No previous bee 🐝 experience needed!)

We will be hosting a guided walk at our rewilding estate in Alfold, to share information about free-living honey bees. During this session you'll observe various occupied hives of free-living bees.

This workshop will be run by our Charity with Guy Thompson from Haslemere Museum. We'll be discussing the merits of providing suitable habitat for wild bees, and talking about the issues they face. You'll also learn what you can do to help Britain's honey bees.

Honey bees are essential to pollinate our food crops, and for providing honey, but given the great concerns about our natural environment and its creatures, the time has come to adjust our relationship with nature and give something back.

After years of exploiting the honey bee for our benefit, we need to allow honey bees free rein to fulfil their purpose in the wide web of life.

The honey bee is much more than an agricultural tool, so come and spend a few hours with us at Maple Farm to learn more about them, and see them thriving.

“anyone who thinks they are too small to make a difference, has never met the honey bee”

Another inspiring Natural Beekeeping workshop at the The Lost Gardens of Heligan. It never ceases to amaze me the enthusiasm and energy created every time like minded folk together.
We witnessed a lot of bee activity around the vacated Latvian Log Hive as scout bees were checking out a possible new home. Thankyou to all those who attended and help the day happen. Looking forward to the next one in June already.

It's only the beginning of April, and it's been unusually cold, but the bees don't seem to have noticed. This is an Eco Tree Hive that swarmed today. It looks like the swarm season has begun.

Empty tree hive showing a lot of activity. Seems too early and cold for a swarm ???
