WORLD BEE DAY - 20th May
Let's talk about Leaf Cutter Bees!
Leafcutter bees cut perfect circles from leaves,
but they don’t eat them. They carefully trim these pieces to build and line their nests, creating cosy chambers for their young.
A leafcutter bee can carry a leaf piece many times
its own weight. She flies it back to her chosen nest site, gripping it tightly as she travels with incredible precision.
Once the nest chamber is filled with pollen and a
single egg, the bee seals the entrance with layers of leaf pieces. This leafy “door”protects the developing bee inside until it’s ready to emerge the following year.
LEAFCUTTER BEES ARE A TYPE OF SOLITARY BEE. DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE ARE OVER 270 TYPES OF SOLITARY BEES IN THE UK ALONE?!
