There are fashions in humour as in everything else.
What seemed hilariously funny to our grandparents may only be mildly amusing to us.
But there are some writers who seem to have a timeless vitality in their wit and such an understanding of the quirks of human nature that their work has a permanent well as a topical appeal.
Richard Gordon, I think, is one of these.
Doctor in the house and Doctor at the sea are completely modern in style and content, yet they have also the timeless quality of Three men in a boat.
To write one really good humorous book of wide appeal is by no means easy.
To write a sequel which at times is even funnier, is really remarkable.
But Richard Gordon is a remarkable young man.
There is undoubtedly a treat in store for you in this double volume.
