October roses. They’re a bit storm battered and less than perfect, but they’ve loved our incredibly mild and generally sunny October and have thrown up lots of new buds.

How are your roses doing?

Have they sent up an autumnal flush of flowers too?

I never thought I’d grow orange flowers! But I’ve slowly expanded my colour palette to include lots of peachy , copper and orange shades.

The nights are drawing in and the stormy, winter weather is here 😩. I’m clinging on to what flowers have survived the onslaught. An Emma Bridgewater jug full of pink survivors šŸ’•šŸŒø.

Rescued another lot of flowers from the storms. Storm Austen was supposed to have passed through , but it’s been another day of incredibly damaging winds here in Devon. Pretty much no dahlia plant has been left standing - they’ve all been blown sideways šŸ« ā€¦

Storm Austen is doing her worst šŸŒ¬ļøšŸŒ§ļø. It was too dark after work to rescue anything last night so I dashed out in the heavy rain this morning to salvage what I could. A clutch of pastel beauties for the house.

I’m feeling pretty philosophical about the damage - it’s brought the season to a close a little earlier than I’d have liked, but it’s half term this week so I go actually have some time to start the mammoth task of lifting them.

The pompon dahlia . Quite possibly the cutest little bitty pretty thing. I don’t grow huge quantities of them as they’re so small they have limited uses, but every year I’m adding a few more to my stock. They make the most wonderful buttons , a fabulous mini bouquet , and a really interesting addition to a bouquet of fuller sized dahlias.

Do you grow any of these diminutive little things?

For the two people that see my posts these days 🫠. Here are some lovely pink dahlias for you - picked this morning, just for me. The season is rapidly coming to a close but I’m not quite ready to dig them up yet.

It was supposed to rain here today in drought ridden Devon. News flash it didn’t (again). But man was it a gorgeous day.

This is Sweet Love - and she’s hands down the worst dahlia I grew this year šŸ˜‚.

I had a whole row of her and she absolutely hated the heatwaves and the drought. I swear the plants actually went backwards after I planted them out and got smaller šŸ« šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø. Then it was so stressed it became subject to every bug attack known to man and was decimated by spider mite. So in early September I stripped all of the leaves off and cut her right back to the ground. Now finally she’s flowering away - only 5 months after I first planted her out 🫠.

I’m honestly in two minds about whether to grow her next year or not. I haven’t been able to sell a single stem of her to florists. I’m just not sure if she’s a variety that’s particular sensitive to heat stress or if this summer was enough to test any dahlia.
