Itโ€™s that time of year when the harvested apples appear in all sorts of British customs, a childhood favourite of mine was Apple Bobbing.

This Samhain custom consists of a large barrel of water full of apples floating on top, each person would take a turn to try and retrieve an apple from the water using only their mouth. As you can imagine messy and hilarious to participate in. Thereโ€™s also a custom of hanging the apples on strings too with the same concept. Not to mention delicious Toffee Apples..

Interestingly, the folk custom also served as a form of divination for romance. The premise being, the first person to bite an apple and lift it from the water would be the next to marry, or the number of tries required to catch an apple with oneโ€™s mouth foretold whether a relationship would succeed.

The Witches Apple has now got a bigger badder sister. A larger version is now available a hefty 230 g

The Night Owl

There are lessons of wisdom to be leant from such familiarโ€™s.

She observes her prey patiently, waits for it to expose itself, then strikes. The prey never knows whatโ€™s hit them until itโ€™s too late.

The most deadly move in silence. ๐Ÿ—๏ธ๐Ÿฆ‰โœจ

The Ward

I had hoped at some point I could lay down my left hand a little and sink into a softer existence, alas, there is still much work to do as a woman it seems.

A candle to ward off evil, malicious intent and protect boundaries. Baneful black wax scraps melted and bound by red paint infused with Rowan berry infused oil.

Beeswax with cotton wick

Handmade.

Behind every small business there is almost always folks who have sacrificed something important : friendships , relationships and probably family. Some have missed meals to meet deadlines, cried tears of frustration at failures and tears of joy at seeing their dreams realised.

Please shop small/ Handmade this season if you have the means,. Itโ€™s not a phase for us. I know itโ€™s tempting to mooch in the isles of TK Max and superstoress and in most cases cheaper because itโ€™s mass produced.

However, if we are ever to keep craftsmanship and independent business alive we must support them. Share, Like, Recommend, Subscribe it all helps!

Feel free to tag some of your favourite small businesses here so we can discover them!
