Epaulette shark

Growing up to 90cm long they are a species of long tailed carpet sharks, living in oceans around Australia where they are common and protected and New Guinea where they are near threatened due to habitat loss and fishing practices. Uniquely they can use their fins to walk across the ocean floor and also across land in between rock pools, they are able to slow their heart rate and breathing allowing them to survive with little or no oxygen for extended periods of time.

Nautilus - watercolour - off to its new home this week

They can live up to 20 years and now only reach around 10 inches in length although their ancestors could reach up to 10 feet in size, there used to be 10,000 different species but today only 6 different species remain. They have complex brains like octopuses and are capable of spatial learning, as well as being the only cephalopod with only one heart, all other cephalopods have 3 hearts. They have 90 tentacles for catching prey and move through jet propulsion of water through a siphon.

Found in tropical Indian and Pacific oceans, their main threat is over fishing.
