Some highlights from 2025 💫

Although… in scrolling through my phone I’ve realised how much content I’m still yet to share here!

Following my talk at Westminster in 2024, I was invited to where the wonderful team of curators coordinated a tour for me! Ailsa showed me around their archive in Edinburgh and I got to find some more golden nuggets of info on women’s history in flax cultivation. 🤩 Looking back this was really cool and I hope to get more research done in 2026 🤓!

Being into heritage research I was then approached by to fabricate a permanent piece for their Steeple. This turned out to be my biggest and most exciting work to date! I learned so much and am really proud of what I managed to achieve SOLO ⚙️🤯! So much research went into this on the history of the building, and a very cool female blacksmith called Sophie from the 17/1800’s. This piece is still officially yet to launch, although is technically up and installed (hopefully not too much longer a wait to find out what it’s all about)!

I also got to hangout with our First Minister at The Briggait discussing our love of the Scottish Isle’s and importance of capturing the lived experiences of our resilient strong matrilineal lineage. 💪🏽 Perhaps this has inspired another Island Research Trip for 2026? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🚐 …

It was then very cool to finish up the year with a group show at Inverness Creative Academy. I was able to develop more of my pieces for this and am now really excited about where I’m going with brass and stone! 😍 A pleasure to showcase my work alongside Laura, Christine and Fiona.

2025 has very much felt like a full-circle year, lots of new experiences, skills, people and of course not short on challenges. I have wiped the slate clean for 2026 creating space for new work, new ideas and new spaces. I’m beyond excited to get stuck into a new beginning!!

Hopefully more open road exploring, brass bending, flax growing and unearthing of stories from the past. Lots of love to you all and wishing the best for the year ahead!

Lots of Love, Kayls xox

The wonderful Simon & Fraser from installing my permanent piece into Glasgows third oldest building, the Tron Steeple. Looking forward to sharing more context on this with you all soon, and if you happen to pass under, don’t forget to look up!

The lighting was just gorgeous at Skipness! What a treat to get along the coast with my golden brass. Dying to get back to and produce more of these.

Felt so great to get my work outdoors again, it’s been a few years since I’ve really had the chance. I think I’m definitely onto something new here. I’m excited to continue developing this more. I didn’t want to add text font or audio over the top of this clip. Like it just as it is. There is something so peaceful and grounding about it (for me).

Some close ups of my new fave piece. I am actually still working through fine tuning this, and so am seeing this show as a ‘work in progress’. It is currently on show at the Inverness Creative Academy. I would have preferred to have figured out a more secure way of having my brass imbedded into the stone so it could stand upright. Although, I really am loving pairing the raw stone material with the fluid movement and energy of the brass bar. I am enjoying the making process behind it and can’t wait to get back into the workshop!

This is a snippet of my smallest developmental piece. This is 12mm round bar brass, melted and manipulated by yours truly 😉! I have set it into my favourite stone from Lismore. I believe it is Limestone and that gorgeous warm orange mark on it just felt so special when I found it. I collected this stone a few years back during my research trip across the Hebrides. It was from the coastal edge near Laggan Croft; where my ancestors resided for generations. I was so nervous to cut a slide out of this stone. I definitely made all my cuts slightly too wide, but I’m learning and things are taking shape!

Lots of fun throwing my big rope around the beautiful Inverness Creative Academy! I only wish I had more time here to play in the space, perfect those little details and document the show better. There are so many hats I need to wear, in this case I couldn’t do it all due to time-location restrictions - butttt 💡 It’s been super fun exhibiting my big stuff further north. Gotta love getting the highland-coastal inspired work up into their preferred destination. ⛰️♥️

And beyond the selfie… there is an artist, wearing many hats… Making, meeting, learning, documenting, managing, monitoring… 😅

Just a few of the things I’m up to as I work on this pretty cool commission 🥳!
