A calm home doesn’t have to mean pale colours and empty surfaces. Often, it’s about making the room feel less busy and more comfortable to spend time in.
At the windows, start with the light. If you’re squinting at your screen or moving seats to escape the glare, a light-filtering fabric can soften the daylight without shutting it out.
Then think about how the window covering sits alongside everything else. Choosing a shade close to your walls creates a gentler transition, particularly in a small room or one with several windows. Texture can bring interest without adding another pattern.
It’s worth checking the fabric with daylight behind it, too. A warm neutral in the sample book can look surprisingly cool at the window.
And consider privacy before you settle on a style. Top-down, bottom-up blinds can cover the lower part of the glass while leaving daylight coming in above - useful if your room faces the street.
The aim is to choose something that lets you feel at ease in the room, whatever you’re doing.
