Ali Lou Field - Tapestry

I am a tapestry weaver and dyer, and create landscape inspired woven art, sometimes combined with embroidery.

Member of The British Tapestry Group and the West Surrey Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers. When I weave I am inspired by the natural world and places that bring me feelings of stillness and harmony. Each piece is infused with the essence of these places and emotions. I love using natural yarns, such as wool, silk, cotton, recycled fabric strips and alpaca. I use a mix of modern and traditional

weaving techniques, and hand-dye yarn to create delicious tonal variations for the landscapes. I hope my work makes your heart sing and nourishes your soul, as it does mine…

Another limestone cliff, this time the beautiful 70m high gently curving Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales.

Whilst I visited quite a number of times when I was a student in Leeds, and then as a caver in the 1980's, I took the photos for this tapestry on a lovely return visit with my grown-up son last summer - a very special place!

I popped in to the fabulous Art & Grind yesterday - my favourite place for a cuppa in Guildford!

I dropped in a whole bunch of greetings cards, coaster cards and 3 little tapestries which are now on sale there...

Weaving Workshop

You will learn weaving techniques such as plain weave, switching colours and making shapes to make a little textured weaving that you can either hang from a dowel or mount in a frame. Beginners are very welcome, and all weaving materials will be provided at the workshop.

The workshop includes:

• A lovely selection of yarns in a variety of colours and textures
• A 22cm x 14cm cardboard loom (prepared with vertical ‘warp’ strings, all ready to weave), weaving needle and dowel to hang your weaving on
• Instruction sheets showing how to weave; finish your weaving and hang it from a dowel; frame a weaving; and how to setup the loom to use again

I am a little late posting this, but this year’s West Surrey Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers annual challenge was to make something inspired by the 20th century artist Barbara Hepworth.

A lot of her work is wonderfully curvaceous, which was quite a challenge for a tapestry weaver who weaves mostly flattish things!

After much thinking, I finally chose her beautiful ‘Stringed Figure (Curlew)’, made from brass and string in 1956 (on the left at the top).

I used some bronze yarn with a little sea-glass cotton for the verdigris, and wove floral stem wire in with the edge warps so the piece could be bent to shape. And then I strung it as per the original.

It was a real labour of love, and so I was absolutely delighted it was voted the winner of the Peggy Flounders trophy!

It has been a bit of a mission, but I have just completed my tapestry with embroidery of the beautiful Watts Chapel in Compton!

Come and see it, and lots of other deliciousness from local artists and makers at the Old Kiln Room Christmas Showcase on the 17th and 18th December at the Watts Gallery!

Very much looking forward to being right next to their wonderful cafe for the next two days (not sure it will help my waistline though)!

It has been a lovely afternoon to photograph the wonderful Watts Chapel in Compton, ready to weave as a new tapestry...
hopefully in time for the Old Kiln Room Showcase on the 17th and 18th December at the Watts Gallery!

Come for a cuppa in the café, a lovely stroll up to the chapel, and of course, get in some last minute Christmas shopping with some wonderful local artists and makers!
