BLEACH DAMAGE? DON’T PANIC! 🧽✨

One of yesterday’s jobs took us to Bromley, where a client’s cleaner had accidentally caused bleach damage to the carpet in several areas throughout the property.

You’d be surprised just how many everyday household cleaning products contain bleaching agents. Unfortunately, it only takes a small accident to leave behind those unsightly, discoloured patches on your carpet.

And unlike an ordinary stain, bleach actually removes the colour from the carpet fibres, meaning no amount of cleaning will bring that original colour back!

Thankfully, that’s where The Carpet Repair Guys come in! 💪

We attended the property and successfully repaired the affected areas, saving our client the expense and inconvenience of replacing perfectly good carpet.

🚨 Moving house in a week… and then the dog does THIS to the stairs! 🐶🤦‍♂️
Our customer was just days away from handing their home over to the new owners when their dog decided to attack the stair carpet.
Not exactly how you want to leave the house for the people moving in!
Replacing the whole staircase carpet at the last minute wasn’t ideal, so they contacted The Carpet Repair Guys to see if we could get them out of a pickle.
We assessed the damage, came up with a repair plan and got to work. The result? Staircase rescued, damaged areas repaired and one very relieved customer ready for moving day. 🙌
Pet damage doesn’t always mean a new carpet. Sometimes you just need the right repair.
And maybe keep the dog away from the stairs for the final week. 😂🐾

47 years old… and still worth saving ❤️

Yesterday we worked on a carpet that was originally fitted on 12th September 1979 — and remarkably, it’s still in the same home today.

Normally, a carpet of this age with damage would simply be replaced. But this one was different.

The lady who owns the home is now living with dementia, and her family explained how important it is to keep her surroundings as familiar as possible — the colours, the furniture and the things she has known for so many years.

And she has always loved this carpet.

So rather than replacing it, the family asked us to do what we could to keep it going.

At 47 years old, we were never going to make it look brand new — nor was that really the point. Our job was simply to repair the damaged areas, patch everything as sympathetically as possible and help return the carpet to some kind of normality.

Sometimes carpet repair isn’t about saving money or making something look perfect.

Sometimes it’s about keeping a little bit of familiarity in someone’s home. ❤️

And this was definitely one of those jobs.

I’ve been repairing carpets for a long time now, and apparently I’ve added another qualification to the list…

Relationship counselling. 😂

This loop pile carpet had a bit of a falling out. In fact, some of the rows had literally fallen out with each other.

To the homeowner, damage like this can look horrendous. You look down, see rows of carpet pulled out and naturally start thinking the whole thing is ruined.

But this is exactly the type of repair I love doing.

Loop pile carpets are very different to work with, and replacing damaged rows takes a bit of patience, experience and plenty of attention to detail. Carefully working through it, row by row, we were able to put everything back where it belonged.

Crisis over. Relationship saved. Carpet rows reunited. 😂

It’s always satisfying when something that initially looks like a complete disaster turns into a successful repair.

🐶 When a Jack Russell meets a loop pile carpet…
This one could have turned into a very expensive puppy mistake!
A new Jack Russell had managed to get hold of the loop pile carpet and pull it, causing significant damage. To make matters worse, this carpet ran throughout the property, so replacing it wasn't going to be a simple or inexpensive option.
That’s when we got the call.
Loop pile carpets are notoriously difficult to repair when they've been pulled like this. Once those loops have been damaged, recreating the original appearance by hand takes a lot of patience and experience.
Will a repair like this ever be 100% perfect? Probably not — and we'll always be honest about that.
But there's a big difference between something not being technically perfect and something no longer being an eyesore.
In fact, maybe our idea of perfection is higher than most people's! We know exactly where we've worked, so we'll spot tiny differences that most people would probably never notice.
Our aim is simple: take your eye away from the damage and make the carpet something you can enjoy again rather than something you notice every time you walk into the room.
So, if your new puppy has decided your carpet makes a great new toy, don't assume replacement is your only option.

Now this was an interesting one today!
We were called to a brand-new gym where a custom-made gym sled track / functional training turf had unfortunately been damaged during either delivery or installation.
Normally you might think, “Just order another one.” Unfortunately, it wasn't quite that simple. The entire surface had been custom-made in China, and getting another one could potentially have meant waiting another six months for it to be manufactured, shipped and installed.
That's why we always say repair isn't necessarily just about saving money. Sometimes it's about convenience, time and avoiding an enormous amount of unnecessary disruption.
After assessing the damage, The Carpet Repair Guys were able to professionally repair the specialist gym turf and save the existing custom-made surface. The customer was absolutely over the moon – and understandably so. Instead of potentially waiting six months for another floor, the one they'd already waited for could be saved.
Even after more than 30 years in the carpet industry, we still get jobs that make us think outside the box, and that's exactly what we love about what we do.

So, who actually is The Carpet Repair Guy?
I'm Richard, and I've spent over 30 years working in the carpet industry, helping people get out of those horrible little situations where one bit of damage suddenly makes an otherwise perfectly good carpet look ruined.
Iron burns, pet damage, moth damage, damaged stairs, ripped carpets, doorway damage, loose carpets – I've seen just about everything over the years. And one of the biggest things experience teaches you is that the obvious repair isn't always the best repair. Sometimes customers contact me convinced they need a patch or even a completely new carpet, when there's actually another way of repairing it.
That's what I love about this job. It's not simply about knowing how to put a patch into a carpet. It's about understanding carpets well enough to look at the damage and work out the best possible way of repairing it. After more than three decades doing this, I've developed and learned techniques that can sometimes save carpets customers genuinely believed were finished.
I'm also proud to be one of the few people in the country teaching carpet repair to others. I think there's something quite special about reaching a point in your career where you're not only carrying out the work yourself, but passing those skills and knowledge on to the next generation of carpet repair professionals.

Today I had to cancel a carpet repair job in London because there was nowhere to park, and I have to say, it's getting ridiculous. A customer living in London contacted us because they needed a tradesperson to come to their home and carry out a repair. We were ready to do the job, we had all the tools and equipment we needed, but the one thing we didn't have was somewhere we were legally allowed to put the van.
I completely understand that London needs parking restrictions. I understand resident bays, keeping roads clear and controlling traffic, and I've got absolutely no problem paying a reasonable amount to park while we're working. What I don't understand is having residential streets where there is effectively no practical option whatsoever for a tradesperson to park. What exactly are we supposed to do?
A tradesperson's van isn't just transport – it's part of our workplace. Plumbers, electricians, builders, locksmiths and companies like ours carry specialist tools, machinery and materials that we need throughout the job. Telling tradespeople to park miles away or use public transport simply isn't realistic. And a loading bay doesn't solve the problem either. We're not delivering a parcel and leaving; we're working inside someone's property, sometimes for several hours.
People living in London still need tradespeople. Boilers still break, pipes still leak, electrics still need repairing and carpets still get damaged. Yet we're making it increasingly difficult for the very people providing those services to actually reach their customers. The alternative is to risk a substantial parking fine simply for turning up to do a job someone has specifically asked you to do. How is that sensible?
Surely there should be a proper London-wide system for legitimate tradespeople. I'm not saying give us free parking. Register our vans, let us provide the address we're working at and charge us a sensible amount – just give us somewhere legal to park while we do our jobs.
Today's customer wanted their carpet repaired. We wanted to repair it. We had everything needed to do the repair. The job was cancelled because there was nowhere to put the van.
London needs its tradespeople. Maybe it's about time it gave us somewhere to bloody park.
