The work before the window! About to start the next commission, so need to make sure I have a construction board big enough to build and transport it on, and this one’s a big’un! A 192cm high front door sidelight 😍 we had to dismantle one if the 2m boxes the lead gets delivered in to make the board…. And I’ve had to push 2 tables together to work on 🙄🤷‍♀️

If you told me this time 18 months ago that I’d be working on commissions of this size, with another 5 waiting, I wouldn’t have believed you!

Trying to start to structure my time better going forward, so going to allocate set days to commission work vs online orders vs event & gallery prep, to try to get a better balance and be more time efficient, rather than feeling like I’m juggling a million plates multitasking! Small business owners and creatives - is that even a thing?! 🤣🫣

Back-to-back flower stem workshops Friday & Saturday over the weekend, with one private hire as a family Christmas present, and one scheduled session….. so took yesterday off to have some down time before starting afresh today - new week, new MONTH, new commission! 😱🤩

Did you know I do private bookings for all of my workshops?
If you have a group of at least 3 people & would like to come and create something wonderful together, let me know!
Most classes only have a few places left, but for up to 4 people, I can book you a date of your choice in at the Keswick Studio, or up to 6 people at The Gather in Ennerdale bridge.

I’m not great with heat, so it was kind of bitter-sweet that I had shed loads of admin to do yesterday, and the WiFi in the workshop is so poor that I had to stay indoors with the room fan when it’s hitting 34 degrees outside!

I sometimes wonder if I spend too long considering, drafting & quoting on my bespoke design packages, and felt awkward at first asking for a design fee in case it put people off, or asking for a contribution to go towards my time if it was just me being too slow…..

But this quote from .stained.glass is spot on. 🙌

Whenever I take on a new client, I think it’s so important to get to know the context behind the piece they are thinking of commissioning - not just where it’s going to go & any design elements or themes the clients wants, but also what’s bought the person to me & what the story is behind the design brief.
I want to consider the light, the colours, the textures I might use and the balance of the design, but also the people who are going to view it and how I want the window to make them feel.

I value the trust & faith people put in me to create something personal & perfect for them and their space. This phase lays the foundations for everything that comes next….
The idea my work will potentially continue bringing joy longer than I’m around is a pretty special thing….. so yes, it may take a bit longer than planned sometimes, but please understand, I want it to be perfect for you & to feel proud of what I handover, so it will be worth it, I promise…. 😘

I’m sure I’m not the only one whose first stained glass love was possibly a Tiffany lampshade?!

Obviously natural light through a stained glass window is just magical, but there’s something about the intricacy, colours and beauty of a glass lampshade that just mesmerises me…. I’ve got some absolutely beautiful books cataloguing the original designs, and it’s one of my life goals to recreate one (I have the pattern, and the ‘form’ to create it on, but just not the time!!)….. for now, the metal lanterns we create in my workshops will suffice!!!

But on a tour of a private Cumbrian arts & crafts house last week with , I saw one of my favourites IN REAL LIFE (the green one) and I’m ashamed to admit it, but I completely welled up and couldn’t speak!
It was the best birthday present ever…. Those tears were happy, but also sad, as it was hidden in a corner behind a mannequin advertising the club kit, and next to a load of plastic water bottles!!!! I immediately decluttered said disrespectful ‘junk’ to let it breathe & sing, much to the amusement of the tour guide! 😂🤦‍♀️ And this was the house that just kept on giving - every room had another lighting fixture for me to ogle at!
