Harry and Arthur have been back up Hemswell Antique Centres after a few recent sales and some exciting new arrivals.

We’ve just added an impressive 19th-century carved Breton buffet, profusely decorated with wonderful scenes of French country life, alongside a beautiful Early Victorian zebrawood and rosewood centre table.

Both pieces are now available to view at our unit upstairs in the Guardroom at Hemswell Antique Centre.

The Breton cabinet will also be coming to our website very soon, so stay tuned.

Harry with some of the exceptional new secretaire chest stock that went live on our website this week, including both a pair and a single example.

The new arrivals include a pair of Napoleon III serpentine kingwood, tulipwood and marquetry secretaire chests, alongside a French kingwood, rosewood and tulipwood ormolu secretaire chest, dating to circa 1890.

Arthur showcases what may be the most important piece we have ever offered.

This extraordinary Florentine Baroque commode, dating to circa 1690–1720, is attributed to the Grand Ducal Workshops of the Medici court — a tradition that produced some of the most important and prestigious furniture in Europe.

What began as a beautiful 17th-century Italian commode became something far more significant as our research developed. Its exceptional ivory and pewter inlay, richly figured walnut, Foggini-designed ormolu mounts and surviving “LC” stamp led us to close comparisons with documented furniture from former Medici residences, including Palazzo Pitti and Villa La Quiete.

We are extremely grateful to the leading Italian furniture specialists, international dealers, authors and historians who have generously shared their knowledge and helped us with this research. A sincere thank you to everyone who has contributed - and continues to contribute - as we investigate this remarkable piece further.

A significant work of Florentine cabinetmaking, and one we are incredibly proud to offer.

Harry and Arthur have been back at Hemswell today, adding several new pieces to our display following a number of recent sales.

Newly added upstairs in the Guardroom:

• Gillows of Lancaster Davenport, c.1830
• William IV rosewood occasional table
• George III mahogany chest of drawers by J. Moorcroft, c.1790, with a beautiful rich patina
• Pair of French Rococo gilt bronze figural candelabra, late 19th century

You’ll never guess where this table was made. 🌍

Made in Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka) around 1840, this remarkable centre table is crafted from ebony and calamander, two of the most prized decorative hardwoods used by the island’s nineteenth-century cabinetmakers.

Unlike the specimen-wood arrangements often found on Ceylonese tables, its top features an unusual radiating design, enriched with delicate ivory inlay and exceptionally fine silver stringing.

Despite our research, we have yet to find another recorded example with quite this pattern.

The richly carved ebony pedestal and original tilting mechanism reveal even more of the craftsmanship behind this fascinating piece.
