Lighting is one of the most overlooked elements of interior design, yet it’s what gives a room its atmosphere.

Rather than relying on a single ceiling light, layering your lighting transforms how a space feels from morning through to evening.

✨ Ambient lighting creates the overall glow.
✨ Task lighting provides practical light where you need it.
✨ Accent lighting highlights artwork, architectural details and adds depth.

When these layers work together, a room feels warmer, more inviting and effortlessly balanced. It’s the difference between a space that simply looks good and one that truly feels good to spend time in.

If you’re planning your next room makeover, don’t leave lighting until the end , it should be considered from the very beginning.

Create a show home that buyers remember.

A well-designed show home does far more than showcase a property, it helps buyers imagine a lifestyle. When people can picture themselves living in a space, they’re far more likely to form an emotional connection, and that’s often what turns interest into a sale.

At MJM Design Studio, every show home is designed with your target buyer in mind, creating interiors that feel aspirational, welcoming and completely liveable.

✨ Our show home design service includes:

• Understanding your target market and buyer profile
• Space planning to maximise every room
• Furniture, lighting and accessory sourcing
• A cohesive colour palette and material selection
• Styling that enhances key features of the property
• Full installation and finishing touches, ready for launch

The result is a beautifully presented home that not only photographs well but also encourages buyers to stay longer, connect emotionally and see themselves living there.

Whether it’s a single show home or an entire development, thoughtful interior design can help your properties stand out in a competitive market.

If you’re planning your next development, I’d love to discuss how MJM Design Studio can help bring it to life.

The beauty of a bespoke kitchen lies in the details and in this example, the quiet style.

I found this image and wished I had designed it! It’s so quietly beautiful!

I’ve broken down every element that creates the look, from the fluted oak cabinetry and warm stone finishes to the aged brass hardware, layered textures and carefully curated styling pieces. It’s these thoughtful details that make a space feel both timeless and effortlessly inviting.

The final slide shows how you can recreate this aesthetic with similar pieces at a more accessible price point, proving that great design is less about the budget and more about understanding the ingredients that bring a room together.

Save this post if you’re planning your dream kitchen.

Items that I have found for the final slide:

Granite for waterfall island - Sensa Taj Mahal granite from Meridian Work Surfaces | Granite & Quartz Worktops
Pot filler and tap - LUSSO
Tiles - Victorian Black and White Tiles from Total Tiles
“Pout” Blanket from SONMO
Valencia Table from Portman Stone | Worktop Experts
Fluted Wood Cabinetry from Bathroom + Kitchen Eleven
Dining chair from NEXT HOME DESIGN
Rug from John Lewis & Partners

If only I knew who designed the original kitchen I would tag…. If it’s you, do get in touch x

One thing I’ve noticed is how much beauty we’ve stripped from ordinary life.

Look at old train stations, street lamps, public buildings, furniture, shop signs, even door handles. The things people used every day weren’t treated as purely functional objects, they were designed with care, craftsmanship, and a sense of pride.

Somewhere along the way, we started treating beauty as a luxury rather than a necessity. Efficiency, cost cutting, and minimalism became the priority, and many of the details that gave places character disappeared.

Modern design doesn’t have to be boring. Functionality and beauty aren’t opposites. The spaces and objects we interact with every day shape how we feel, whether we notice it or not.

If previous generations could make ordinary things beautiful, there’s no reason we can’t do the same today.

That’s where I come in! Let me make your everyday beautiful!!

If you love interiors, you’ve probably heard of colour drenching, but there’s another technique having a real moment right now: colour capping.

🎨 Colour drenching is all about immersion. Walls, ceilings, woodwork, doors and mouldings are all painted in the same colour (using the appropriate finishes for each surface). The result is a beautifully cohesive, cocooning space that feels rich, cosy and intentional. It works particularly well in enclosed rooms such as bedrooms, lounges and dining rooms.

✨ Colour capping, on the other hand, takes a more nuanced approach. Instead of one colour throughout, the walls, ceiling and woodwork are painted in complementary tonal shades of the same colour family. The tone may become lighter, deeper or even subtly contrasting as the eye moves upward, creating depth, interest and a gentle sense of movement within the room.

So, while colour drenching wraps a room in a single colour, colour capping uses colour strategically to draw the eye and frame the space.

Both can look incredible, it simply comes down to whether you’re after full immersion or a more subtle design statement.

Which would you choose: colour drenching or colour capping? 👇

If you’re choosing paint shades the light in your room can completely change how colours looks and feels.

☀️ South-facing rooms feel warm and bright
Cool whites can keep the space feeling soft and balanced, while warmer tones appear creamier and more cosy.

❄️ North-facing rooms tend to feel cooler
Shades with gentle warm undertones like soft pinks, yellows, or browns can help the space feel brighter and more inviting. Or go dark and moody!

🌅 East & west-facing rooms change throughout the day
Using tonal shades and a few deeper accents can create a calm, balanced feel from morning to evening.

✨ Always try samples in the room itself and look at them at different times of day before deciding.
