Yesterday I said that extraordinary homes can look cheap, while very ordinary homes can look expensive.

Here are five decisions I think can make a difference.

📍Be brave with scale:

A small room doesn’t mean everything has to be small. A generous lamp, rug, mirror or piece of artwork can give a modest room more presence.

And in a large room, undersized furniture, lighting or art can look like a pea on a mountain!

📍Don’t let everything fight for attention:

Think about getting dressed: statement earrings, necklace, patterned dress, fabulous shoes AND a bright bag? You wouldn’t know where to look. A room is no different.

📍Make it go. Don’t make it match:

Different colours, patterns, woods and finishes can work beautifully together. They just need a connection - think colour, texture, shape or material.

Matching is easy and it's horribly predictable.
Making different things work together is what makes a room feel considered.

📍Spend where you’ll see the difference:

Budget matters, but not everything needs a big price tag.

Spend where quality will show, then mix in vintage finds, charity-shop treasures, TK Maxx bargains and things you’ve owned for years.

📍Choose something that isn’t obvious:

If someone walks in and says, “I’ve got that bowl… that lamp… that ornament…” sorry, but to me that’s not really a compliment. I’d rather they said, “Where did you get that?”

❗️But different doesn’t mean random. It still has to work with the room in scale, colour, shape, texture or proportion.

✨️And when I say expensive-looking, I don’t mean a room that looks as though you’ve spent a fortune.

I mean confident, considered and less predictable.

✨️You want guests to absolutely love your home.

The trick is making sure they can’t quite put their finger on why 😉

Save these five for the next time you’re making decisions about a room.

Meet Humphry 👋
He’s the chair. I’m the one with the opinions.

Welcome to Humphry & Me — a new series where I answer five quick-fire questions about interiors: what works, what doesn’t, and the things I probably have stronger opinions on than I should.

Part 1: My Non-Negotiables for Your Home.

And yes, short curtains made the list. Obviously.

There’s plenty more to come, so if there’s something you’d like me to answer in a future Humphry & Me, leave me a question below.

Part 2 next Monday.

Be honest, did you notice? 👀

These two vases were already different heights — just NOT DIFFERENT ENOUGH.

A 4cm lift made the difference more obvious, then pushing one back and bringing one forward gave the grouping more depth.

They’re also placed here very deliberately. The strongest connection is the diagonal one they create with the lamp through colour and scale, with the old books helping to anchor the grouping.

What makes it more interesting is the contrast: a classic, smooth lamp against aged, rustic vases and old books.

✨️Height, depth, connection and contrast - tiny changes, but they make a big difference.

Follow along for more of the little details that make a big difference to a room.

The one thing your home can’t fake? A story.

A home can be beautifully designed, elegant and carefully curated - but I would never want it to stop there.

The pieces that make a home feel truly personal are often the ones that carry memory, history, character or meaning:

An old book. A pocket watch. A vase with age and imperfections. A picture that means far more to you than it ever could to anyone else.

These are the things that prevent a home from feeling anonymous. They do not have to be valuable, fashionable or even particularly beautiful. They simply have to mean something.

So yes, create the beautiful backdrop - but then add the pieces that could only belong to you.

That is when it starts to feel like home.

Do you have something in your home that you would never part with?

She wanted to move.

A ÂŁ120 Design Hour showed her what needed to change.

She had lived in her home for less than a year, but the room simply wasn’t working for her. There was nothing terribly wrong with it. She had lovely furniture and a calm neutral palette, but it felt flat, unfinished and lacking in character.

What she needed was clarity: what was wrong, what was missing and where to spend her money.

That is exactly what our ÂŁ120 Design Hour is for. You can take the advice and make the changes yourself. There is no obligation to use us for anything else.

This client was local and asked us to carry the work through for her, so we replaced the pale rug with something warmer and more textured, softened the windows with floaty curtains and chose two striking aged mirrors instead of the more obvious artwork.

Then we added the layers that bring a room to life: texture, height, movement and something personal.

There is still more to come, including wallpaper and new cushions, but she has already told me:
“Before you came, I wanted to move. Now I love it.”

Sometimes you do not need a different home. You need help seeing what your home could become.

Our ÂŁ120 Design Hour gives you one focused hour to understand why your room is not working and what to change. You can implement the advice yourself, or ask us to help further if you are local.

For a complete room concept or more involved design support, there is also The Vision and The Autograph.

What would you ask in one hour?

This client originally booked a Design Hour.
Then moved on to The Vision.
We are now working together on The Autograph.

Our role is to show you what your home is capable of.

How far you take it and how involved you’d like us to be, is completely up to you.

Save yourself from wasting ÂŁÂŁÂŁ

Choosing paint colours?

Have you done this first?

✨️I’ve just saved a lovely, busy working mum over £600.

She’d booked her decorator for June (2 full days) and was about to buy litres of paint… but she was also about to make one of the biggest mistakes I see people make when redesigning a room.

Choosing paint first.

I do understand why:

Paint feels like the starting point.

You can go and collect charts… it’s exciting.

Test samples… even more exciting.

It feels productive.

But professionally?

You should usually be thinking about the larger, harder-to-source pieces first.

Your sofa.
Curtains.
Rugs.
Fabrics.
Wood tones.
Stone.
Textures.

📍Because if this lady had later fallen in love with a sofa, rug or curtain fabric and the undertones didn’t work with the newly painted walls, she would either have had to:

Pay her decorator all over again 🙈

or worse…

Live with a room that never felt quite right and probably never know why 😟

Because in her mind, she loved the paint.
And she loved the fabric.

But that doesn’t always mean they work together.

Paint is flexible.

Paint can be colour matched into thousands upon thousands of shades and undertones.

But finding the perfect fabric or sofa to work with a paint colour you impulsively fell in love with first?

That can become surprisingly difficult.

📍Especially once lighting, undertones, texture and natural daylight enter the equation.

The homes that feel calm, layered and effortless are usually the result of decisions being made in the right order.

This one shift alone can save so much frustration 👌

If your home doesn’t feel quite right but you’re not sure where to begin, this is exactly why I created The Design Hour and The Vision - to help you make confident decisions before expensive ones.

5 things I never budge on.

After years of working with all kinds of people, in all kinds of homes, these things always make a huge difference.

Beautiful, elevated, thoughtfully designed rooms start at the planning stage - that’s the best time to bring us in.

But let’s face it…
life gets busy.

Before you know it, the room has crept up on you and you just don't like it anymore - or did you ever?

Don’t panic.
These 5 things can completely change how a room feels:

📍Add colour - it gives character
It gives joy and personality, and you shouldn’t live without it just because Pinterest told you beige was “timeless.”

📍Layer lighting - it looks expensive
Choose lamps with presence and personality.
Not tiny beige lamps just because they’re trending.

📍The rug - if it’s tiny, ditch it
Rugs aren’t accessories.
A properly sized rug grounds a room and changes everything.

📍De-clutter - it’s making your room feel messy
You don’t need everything you love on display in one space.

Negative space allows beautiful pieces to breathe properly.

📍Curtains - buy cheap, buy twice
Beautiful curtains completely transform a room when they’re done properly.

Height. Fullness. Fabric. Proportion.
Honestly, they need a reel of their own.

This, and a whole lot more is why clients come back to us time and time again for new rooms and new homes.

If you’d love a home that feels beautiful as well as looks beautiful… maybe it’s time we said hello ☺️

home should be the place you exhale.
The place you love coming back to.

For over 20 years, I’ve helped busy people create beautiful homes that work for real life.

Sometimes that’s a full design project.
Sometimes it’s styling, sourcing, beautiful curtains, or pulling a room together.

And sometimes… one focused hour changes everything.

From 60-minute virtual sessions to local turnkey projects and everything in between.

✨ Save this for later if now isn’t the time. When it is, I’m here.
