Jess Woodrow was our ultimate drop off of the day yesterday. Small and beautifully formed pieces with multiple layers of thick juicy oils, each one a jewel to behold.

“My paintings arise from a dialogue between landscape and consciousness — a search for the quiet thresholds where the outer world mirrors the inner one. I’m drawn to the mythic and the unseen presences that inhabit natural spaces: the guardians of sacred groves, the spirits of stone, the whispering silhouettes of trees at dusk. These entities are not literal figures but emanations of awareness, reflections of how we perceive and project meaning onto the earth itself.
Each work begins with close observation of place — the curve of a hillside, the pulse of green light through leaves — but evolves toward something inward, a dream terrain. Layers of pigment act as sediment of memory and time, where transparent glazes open portals between form and spirit. Through the process of painting, I seek to record not the landscape itself, but the consciousness that moves through it.
Ultimately, my work is an invitation to attunement — to perceive the quiet intelligences that move beneath the visible surface of the world. In these painted spaces, I hope to evoke a sense of guardianship and reverence, reminding us that what is sacred still lingers in the world around us, waiting to be recognized.”

I am delighted that Georgie Richardson will be joining us for And Curiouser opening this Friday Noon-5pm.

“My focus has been on painting mostly what surrounds me, while not painting, when my children were little, I would always create gardens, patches of annual flowers and vegetables , where ever I was allowed, these became my canvases and my intention was to paint what grew there. I am now doing just that and love the accidental compositions that occur, intrusive weeds become quite interesting to my painterly mind !”

My painting explores the passing of time , transience of life; flowers as a subject capture this ephemeral nature and I believe deserve attention . Domestic objects that transcend time to perform daily unassuming tasks , like feeding us , vessels that hold life all interest me . My process always starts with drawing , then I prefer to work quite intuitively and freely , hoping to keep a fresh feel to the work .

I’ve been so busy with The Gardening Artists exhibition at Aberglasney Gardens this month that it’s now time to refocus my attention on our next exhibition at Studio Cennen.
I’m so excited to see images of the works arriving from the artists by email, WhatsApp and Instagram. It feels as though the exhibition is already beginning to take shape, even before the works arrive.

Lewis Carroll’s Alice stories have been with me since childhood. I come from a family of bookworms, but I wasn’t really one of them. I’ve always preferred to spend my time making things — sewing, knitting, building with Lego, modelling with Plasticine, colouring, drawing, or simply sorting through my grandma’s button boxes.

Alice in Wonderland was one of the few books I truly loved as a young child. Once read, it is never forgotten; it stays with you. When I met my husband at college, he illustrated a book and cast me as his Alice — and the rest, as they say, is history.

So, to choose my three favourite childhood books as the inspirational themes for this year’s exhibitions at Studio Cennen has been a real joy. The artists and makers have embraced the titles with such imagination, AND CURIOUSER promises to be a truly magical journey.

I can’t wait to share it with you.
