Happy Independence Day Grenada šŸ‡¬šŸ‡©
This work tells the story of Malvina, an enslaved woman from Carriacou who was taken with her Scottish enslavers to their ancestral home to care for their children. While she was ā€œtreated wellā€, she missed home so much she would request a newspaper from Carriacou be sent to her annually.
Created on a bamboo souvenir tray, this work reimagines the longing she must have felt for her homeland and returns her there.

Bringing granny’s doiley and some wallpaper into the print room. I knew I could find a way to honour these memory-filled materials and allow them to tell stories in a new way.
I have a series in mind for the new year - this is very exciting. Once again thank you for this brilliant prize.

I noticed today a certain wistfulness, over it, tiyaaad look on all of my figures this year. I think they are mirroring my mood. What a world we live in.
Work in progress…

Soooo close with this one, I always leave the hands till last 😫
But a name is coming to me….slowly. Something to do with shopping in East Street Market. Memories of feeling exhausted after a day weaving through throngs of people past the different stalls, the shop that just sold fussy kids shoes, the one that sold fake Filas, the one for church hats and mu curiosity at the cockney guy selling potted prawns….
On that note would love to know the names of the markets you frequented as a kid. šŸ‘‡šŸ¾

I’m still learning the best approaches to using my foundational medium, wallpaper. 4 years of bubbles, warps, holes and rips and the only thing I know for certain is patience.
50 years of sitting in someone’s loft or an old factory, means each roll of wallpaper has its own personality and needs. I’ve learned to work things out through touch and lots of layers, to fortify the surface for paint.
That’s why i tend to work on multiple pieces at once, to allow for adhesive and paint drying time. here’s one I’m working on… 3 stages, many more layers to go.
