The third panel completed for Holyhead Roman Fort depicts passengers embarking. The arrival of the railway to Holyhead in 1848 and the steam packet service to Ireland was a major boost for the town. The border pattern is derived from the old Chester and Holyhead Railway Company badge and in the background can be seen the SS Cambria paddle steamer.

The second gateway mosaic completed for Holyhead Roman Fort depicts king Maelgwn Gwynedd presenting the abandoned Roman Fort to Saint Cybi in 540 CE. Cybi went on to build a church within the walls and over time the town became known as Cybi’s Castle, Caergybi.

Today I have seen numerous trade unions, folk singers against fascist, brass bands for unity, psychotherapists against n***s , gardeners for migrants, the artists union and the whole rainbow of normal fantastic people and of course the ever present and wonderful ’Mosaics for Palestine’.
Half a million took to the street of London to say no to the fascists, and no to hate!

The first march I ever went on a demonstration in the 70’s was under the red arrow of the Anti N**i League. Never thought I’d still have to be protesting against nazi’s 50 years later.
March for love not hate

The first of the three gateway panels for the Roman Fort at Holyhead completed. Each mosaic shows the historic connection of Holyhead and the port. This one is the north gate to the small stone built fort.
The mosaic depicts the Roman fortified port with a 4th century Limitatei and a Liburnian bireme off shore. The border pattern is inspired by the herringbone stonework within the Roman walls which still survive in good condition.
