Understanding the Differences Between Carpet and Laminate Underlays 🤔
Carpet and laminate underlays vary significantly in terms of thickness, density, and material characteristics.
Carpet Underlay (8mm–12mm): Offers plush cushioning and excellent thermal insulation.
Laminate Underlay (1mm–3mm): Denser and firmer, it is specifically designed to stabilize floating floors, prevent joint damage, and control acoustic echoing.
The Importance of Matching Underlay to Flooring‼️
📐Structural Integrity (Laminate): Using a thick, soft carpet underlay beneath rigid laminate can lead to excessive bounce. This constant movement puts stress on the click-lock joints, resulting in cracks, snaps, or separations over time.
😶🌫️Support and Comfort (Carpet): On the other hand, placing a thin 2mm laminate foam under a carpet eliminates the luxurious springiness, making it feel flat and hard, ultimately leading to premature wear.
💦Moisture and Vapour Barriers (Laminate): Specialized laminate underlay often includes a Damp Proof Membrane (DPM), which protects wood-based laminate from subfloor moisture, preventing warping or mould growth.
🔥Underfloor Heating Efficiency (UFH): Laminate underlays must have a very low TOG rating (generally under 0.5–0.7 TOG) to allow heat to transfer into the room. In contrast, carpet underlays are designed to trap heat, which can block or overheat an underfloor heating system.
🗣️Acoustics: Carpet naturally absorbs sound, while hard laminate flooring requires dense foam or cork underlay to minimize the hollow "clacking" noise of footsteps.
