Tea is considered the national drink of the British people and an integral part of their daily lives. The United Kingdom has been one of the largest tea-consuming countries in the world since the 18th century, and Britons consume more than 165,000,000 cups in the United Kingdom every day, all year round.
Tea is traditionally served with milk in both the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. It is uncommon to drink it black or with lemon, and adding sugar is common. Strong, flavorful tea served in a cup with milk and sugar is a popular combination known as builder's tea. Tea is often accompanied by sandwiches, cakes, and/or biscuits, with a popular British custom of dunking biscuits in the tea.
