“My biggest design regret?
A cream kitchen floor… and two dogs.”

One of our lovely followers shared this recently – and it sparked a great conversation about how flooring choices really perform once everyday life moves in.

In open-plan kitchens especially, the floor has to balance atmosphere with durability.

From our experience:

🏡 TIMBER brings warmth and softness to larger spaces – but will show scratches, dents and general wear over time.

⚙️ PORCELAIN is extremely hardwearing and low-maintenance – though polished finishes can feel slippery when wet.

🧩 RESIN creates a seamless, contemporary look and performs well in busy areas – but requires specialist installation and a higher upfront investment.

🪨 NATURAL STONE offers beautiful variation and timeless character — with sealing and ongoing care needed to keep it looking its best.

There’s rarely a perfect solution — only the right balance for how a home is truly lived in.

Dark bedrooms can feel surprisingly calm and cocooning. Would you consider one in your own home?

For this teenage bedroom within a London townhouse refurbishment, we designed a darker scheme that still felt comfortable and considered. Rather than relying on a single tone, the design layers black across a range of materials and textures.

Key elements included:

✨ Black across multiple materials – timber panelling, joinery and wall finishes introduce depth and variation.

✨ Pattern – subtle geometric wallpaper brings different tones of black and grey into the scheme.

✨ Fabrics – softer textures add warmth and balance the darker palette.

The result is a space that feels dramatic and contemporary, while still comfortable for everyday living.

Getting the layout right was key to the design of this MASTER SUITE.

Originally, the bathroom felt long and tunnel-like on entry. By reworking the setting out and centralising key elements, the space became clearer, more aligned and composed.

The palette carries through from the bedroom – deep blue, stone-effect porcelain tiles, marble and brass trims. This creates cohesion across the suite.

With a generous ceiling height, the shower was carefully detailed to function as an integrated steam room, lowering the internal ceiling to support performance while maintaining overall proportion.

If you’re at the early stages of planning a master suite or renovation, early involvement allows that thinking to shape the space from the outset.

Process behind the design
Master Bathroom – Oxfordshire development

We joined this project once building works were already underway. First fix plumbing had begun, most pipework was in place and cisterns had been installed – all of which naturally shapes the decisions that follow.

So we adapted.

Valve positions were adjusted, new studwork introduced and the shower boxed in to create a clearer separation from the bath. Existing niches were retained but refined to improve proportion and alignment.

Design is rarely a straight line – it’s about resolving what’s already there and making it work beautifully.

In larger homes, it’s often the smaller decisions that bring balance and warmth. This home in Bray, Maidenhead was designed for a family of five, with generous sized rooms.

✨DINING ROOM MARBLE WALL✨
With no fireplace, this became the focal point. Treated like an imposing piece of art, subtle LED lighting has been added on either side to add depth and softness.

A blend of materials, where simplicity outweighs intricacy. Clean lines and softly flowing forms keep the stair calm and elegant.

Used to define the space and add contrast, like a rug on a timber floor. It draws the eye across the room rather than just to the walls.

INTEGRATED LIGHTING SYSTEMS 💡

Lighting is often treated as a technical detail, but it has a huge impact on how a space feels and functions. On many projects we favour integrated systems to give flexibility without visual clutter.

Fewer switches, easier adjustment, lighting that works for different times of day.

🔍 LAYERS, NOT GRIDS
Downlights work best when used discreetly and where focused light is needed, layered with other sources to create warmth and atmosphere.

Always fascinating to share the BEFORE + AFTER of a project . . .
This ENTRANCE HALL in a terraced London townhouse felt narrow, cluttered and underwhelming. As a busy, high-traffic space, it needed to function better – and feel calmer – from the moment our clients stepped inside.

🔄 The focus was on light, flow and proportion. By reworking the circulation, we brought the back room into the hallway to create an anteroom. This allows more a more generous, practical space, particularly when guests enter the home.

📦 Hidden storage for coats, shoes and charging points is integrated discreetly, keeping the main hallway clear. New bordered floor finishes link the spaces visually, while traditional detailing is strengthened with additional panel mouldings beneath the existing dado rail.

🪜STAIRCASE
New flooring and powder-coated metal spindles run from ground floor to basement, allowing light through and offering a glimpse towards the kitchen and dining spaces beyond. Upstairs, a neutral stair runner and carpeted landings bring warmth and continuity.

Bedroom storage should do more than just hide things away. When designed well, it becomes part of the architecture of the room.

📐 Think about internal layouts early; hanging, drawers and shelving shape proportions more than you might expect.

This ✨MASTER SUITE✨ became one of the most significant investments in this townhouse refurbishment. The brief was to create a single, continuous space between bedroom and bathroom – somewhere to retreat, reset and feel at ease.�
The design of the room began with a paper panel that our client loved. This set the tone for the palette, detailing and overall mood.
The original layout placed the bed on the opposite side of the room, with a fireplace limiting circulation and scale. By removing the chimney breast and reworking the proportions, we were able to improve flow and allow the bed to sit as the true centrepiece of the space.
�A full-width run of bespoke storage from now spans the room, increasing functionality while maintaining a calm, balanced feel throughout.��Look out for more details from the en-suite in due course, and a stunning guest suite.
