🚣‍♀️We’ve completed another fantastic season of sailing with New Forest Sailability at Spinnaker Sailing Club and wanted to send a huge thank you to everyone for being so accommodating, and also spotlight some of the brilliant sailing and achievements by attendees from our Dorchester Day Opportunities. George is doing amazing with his certificates and setting his sights on a future goal!

🗣“I like doing the sailing because I’m doing all my courses. I’ve already earned my entry-level certificates in silver and bronze, and I’m working towards gold. The first things I learnt were steering and parking, different knots, and understanding where the wind is coming from – I like sailing around the flags too. My end goal is to be out there sailing on my own.” – George, Day Opportunities Attendee

Stefan from New Forest Sailability also shared a few words and mentioned how their volunteers gain so much from hosting our service users.

🗣“The volunteers really do just love taking people out, seeing a smile on people’s faces and enjoying themselves. They’re able to do what they enjoy – which is sailing – but also pass down their knowledge and skills to the young adults. It’s great to see EMA coming back every week and year – it makes us feel like we must be doing something right! We look forward to starting up again in April.”

✅Activities like sailing provide so many opportunities for our service users to develop confidence, independence and practical skills, while also spending time in the community and meeting new people. Whether it’s learning how to steer a boat, understanding safety, working towards qualifications or simply enjoying being out on the water, there are plenty of opportunities to build on individual goals lead more fulfilling lives.

🗣“Two things I enjoy about sailing are, of course, driving the boat and also talking to all the people here – the people at the club are friendly and chatty. One thing I learnt was safety – and you must always wear a life jacket. One of my goals is to get a gold certificate too – I have a few others to get first!” – Harry, Day Opportunities attendee

🗣"It's so rewarding to see the individuals have something they can work towards and achieve, and actively engage in every week throughout the spring and summer each year. A huge thank you again to everyone at New Forest Sailability for another brilliant season. We’re already looking forward to getting back on the water in April! " - Craig Hutton, Operations Director EMA Social Care

We're often celebrating the achievements, milestones and success stories of the people we support, but it's just as important to take a moment to recognise the incredible staff who make those successes possible. Today, we're proud to celebrate a very special milestone.

Support Worker Bill has now reached TEN YEARS with EMA! 🎉

"We're incredibly proud to have a low staff turnover, with many of our team choosing to build long careers with EMA. That consistency is so important, as it helps the people we support feel comfortable, secure and able to build meaningful relationships with the staff around them.

Bill is the perfect example of that commitment. He has been here since the very beginning, when EMA was a much smaller organisation supporting just a handful of individuals, and ten years later he continues to show the same dedication, reliability and genuine care that he always has.

Anyone who knows Bill will know that he can always be counted on. He has been a constant presence for both the people we support and the wider staff team, and EMA simply wouldn't be the same without him. As someone who spends a lot of time looking at performance, quality and outcomes, it's important to recognise the people who quietly turn up every day, give their all and make a real difference. Bill is one of those people.

I want to personally congratulate him on reaching 10 years with EMA and thank him for everything he has contributed over the last decade. His hard work, professionalism and commitment never go unnoticed. Thank you, Bill." - Craig Hutton, Operations Director

Now officially on the countdown to retirement, Bill remains as dependable as ever. While we're not quite ready to think about what EMA will look like without him, reaching ten years feels like the perfect opportunity to recognise everything he has given to the organisation, the people we support and his colleagues along the way.

Congratulations, Bill, and thank you for a decade of dedication, loyalty and support👏🎉

😎Summer adventures with our Gillingham Day Opportunities group - exploring Dorset, keeping cool and enhancing social connections!

The diverse locations across the Jurassic Coast and around our county give our attendees so much choice when it comes to picking places to go.

📍We've recently visited Kingston Maurward Animal Park & Gardens and Ringstead Bay. Meeting and learning about the different animals was both educational and an exciting sensory experience for us all. Lunch on the beach and relaxing by the water was a brilliant way to unwind and take in the beauty of nature on our doorstep.

🗣"The goat at the farm was funny, he kept trying to eat everyone’s clothes." - Thomas
🗣"The beach trip was awesome! I got to paddle in the sea and sit on a rock like a mermaid." - Daniel

💦Another favourite way to stay cool in the summer - water fights! Physical activity and bonding - keeping everyone in high spirits.

🗣 "The water fight was so funny, and getting the staff soaking wet was a great bonus" - Alexander 😂

🗣"We're always looking for fun and engaging ways to keep cool during the hot weather, it was lovely to see everyone enjoying the beach, ice cream, and the water fight... even if they did all decide to team up on me! These activities have all supported inclusivity, community participation and personal development, encouraging our service users to develop their confidence and their social connections, while enjoying meaningful recreational activities - and having fun along the way. Giving our service users a choice in what we do is key to their experience at EMA and we're so glad to have all these different options for places to go and things to do." - Claire, EMA Support Worker

🌻Sunflowers, supporting local events, and boosting mental health with the Dorchester Day Opportunities group.

One of Dorset's biggest attractions of the summer is always on our calendar for a trip out together, and the Maiden Castle Farm Sunflower Trail is a perfect way to support the amazing local fundraising efforts for Dorset County Hospital, and boost the physical and mental wellbeing of our day opportunities attendees.

✅Getting steps in, playing games, and enjoying photo opportunities with friends mean this is always a day to remember that leaves everyone feeling uplifted and proud to be part of Dorset!

🗣"It was my first time going to a sunflower trail and I really enjoyed it!" - Romana
🗣"Seeing the tractor was cool" - Ben
🗣"It was really good! I enjoyed the walk!" - Harry

The folks over at the trail have done an amazing job and we loved our visit, as always! 💛

✅Supporting our service users with developing their skills, independence, and exploring opportunities for employment and volunteer roles within our communities is a huge part of what we do.

We're all working together for a stronger and more inclusive, Dorset. 💪

🌳Building a stronger future for Dorset!

ℹLed by Dorset Chamber, the Dorset Local Skills Improvement Plan sets out the next phase of work to strengthen Dorset’s skills system and support it to continue to respond to the needs of employers, learners and the wider economy.

🗣"The Dorset Local Skills Improvement Plan rightly recognises that Dorset’s future prosperity depends on unlocking the potential of all its residents. Young people with SEND like those who attend EMA have enormous talents to offer employers when given the right support and opportunities. Through our specialist study programmes such as preparation for adulthood and support for employment, along with supported internships, we are committed to helping build a more inclusive workforce and a stronger Dorset for everyone" - James Dunham, Director of Education at EMA
