An unusual but very exciting commission went to its new owners yesterday!
I was asked to make a large, 30 inch willow ‘Cornucopia’. Otherwise known as a ‘horn of plenty’, these vessels are designed to be filled with autumn’s harvest and are symbols of abundance and gratitude.
It was made with one of my very favourite willows, Brittany Green. Its rods vary widely in colour, even within a single bundle, with hues of red, orange, brown and green. This is the willow we grow most of, although the batch used to make this cornucopia came from Musgrove Willows Ltd (some gratefully via Mortimer Willow!). You might also spot some home grown plaited reedmace nestled into the border ❤️.
I was also asked to make some ‘Cry of the Neck’ displays, using wheat and white willow, dressed in red ribbon skirts. These would have been used traditionally to celebrate the last of the wheat harvest. Many thanks to Castle Farm, Kent for supplying me with the beautiful wheat bundles 😊.
The one in the centre without the wheat is destined to hold a horse’s skull!
I am so grateful to have been given such a fun and interesting commission and I hope to be able to share more about their intended use in the very near future 😊.
