It feels wrong but is it? I don’t know…

What I do know is all these textiles are currently waiting patiently for a new, fabulous life somewhere where they will be truly appreciated 😍

But not as kantha quilts. Trust me, if I can wash a vintage textile, repair it, give it a new life in its original state then I will - often spending waaaaaaay more time on a piece of textile than it’s worth haha

So the next problem is really my indecision 🤔

Square cushions? Bolster cushions? Extra large floor cushions? Meditation cushions? (I like that idea) - or used for reupholstering all those stools I’ve been collecting?

What do you think?

All the leftover scraps will also be collected and batched up as project kits, so nothing goes to waste.

Nonetheless. Does chopping up someone else’s hours of work feel like a terrible thing to do?

Do you like our signage?

It’s low on the priority list 🤣

May started in a glorious cloud of dust, bashing and productive noise 🛠️🪚
Then I busted my shoulder and got told to “slow down FFS”

Not a phrase I usually listen to 😭

So the kanthas came out of their boxes ahead of schedule

Thank you to everyone who snapped them up, I’d done zero promotion in May so I’m very, very grateful to everyone who’s stuck around waiting for interesting new stuff to land 🫶🫶🫶

I’m still not allowed to do any construction work on the studio so it’s full-on back to sourcing, making, repairing and upcycling in June 👏👏

Sooooo… Shall I go to Morocco to find some new things for you? 🤔

Can you see why these are so addictive?

And these are just a few of the details to look out for!

I could go on for hours…

Other things that are often not explained:

👉 Kantha quilts come from the Bengal region. That’s now split into West Bengal (India) and Bangladesh.

So when someone was “Indian kantha quilt” that may not be correct.

Some of the best kantha work comes from Bangladesh

👉 When you start researching kanthas you’ll read a lot about white ones with figurative embroidery. Those are antique Nakshi Kantha. That’s a whole other post!

👉 Most kanthas you see are more recent and come in a dizzying array of colours, ages and embroidery types. I’ve covered only a smidge in this video

👉 Not all kanthas are original. Some have been over printed, over embroidered with polyester “suzani” embroidery or otherwise modified.
Buy them if you love them but I’m more excited about authenticity

👉Kanthas are rarely pristine. Expect patches, wear, and stains. I meticulously clean all mine but that’s not always standard

If you liked this save, share it and follow for some more deep-dives into why these textiles are so captivating 😍

How can a colour combo say so much?

I find it amazing how the eye can see a hot pink with a blush terracotta and instantly remind you of that bougainvillea casually spilling over a distressed plaster wall in a village in southern Spain. 🌺

Or a deep red and blush pink, reminding you of that camel ride across the desert and the nomad tent you stayed in after the sun set behind a dune. (I’m imagining that one) 🐪🌅

Or the day you spent drinking daiquiris on a yacht and swinging from the halyard into a Bagamas lagoon (on the to-do list) 🩵🍹

What’s our colour story? Which combos bring back the best summer memories, those unforgettable moments full of joy?

Do any of these kantha quilts spark memories?

This mini collection lands this weekend

But it’s not about the kanthas

It’s about stories. Memories. Joyful ones.

Tell me yours in the comments 🌈👇

I might be way off the mark…😂

But I’d bet your homes are full of colour, texture, drama, unique details, things that only you have, things you’ve found, collected and loved.

Am I vaguely right, or are you all secret beige-lovers with big cupboards to hide all those colourful kantha quilts, cushions and wall hangings in?

I suspect not… 🌈😁🩵🧡

Follow for more colourful, vintage, eclectic one-offs and random stuff coming your way…❤️

What’s the difference between a Rothko, or the Mona Lisa… and a vintage hand embroidered textile? 👇

It’s all cloth embellished with hand created artistry 🤔 But using paint🫟 or needle and thread 🪡

I reckon if you can hang it on a wall and it gives you the same feeling of awe, wonder, excitement, serenity or happiness then anything goes.

Some may disagree 🤷‍♀️

I just think of these older vintage Bengali kantha - made to be used in the home, discarded when they get worn - as paintings.

Created by people, made unique by history. A glorious combination of human endeavour and natural entropy.

We have a new collection of these vintage kantha landing on the website this weekend, all full of history and intricate detail, all different, some new, some with this beautiful abstract painting timeworn texture that just demands to be displayed as art 🖼️

Would you hang one as art?

Love it or hate it you can’t deny that hanging big textiles on walls will stir some opinions 🤣

I was that poor student, trying to think up creative ways to hide the wood chip wallpaper and stained carpet on zero budget (lucky for me the art department didn’t have locks on the paint cupboard doors haha 🤑)

That was a long time ago but I’m still protective of student me, with the compulsion to make a place feel like a home even if you don’t have a nice cosy trust fund.

So I will vigorously defend anyone doing the same against all design snobs and elitists🤺

Because all creativity in the face of a budget crisis deserves applause IMO👏

That’s why when someone finds a vintage textile in a junk shop, a cool hat or a doily at a vintage fair and hangs it on the wall I WILL do a little jig in congratulation 💃

Because thinking creatively doesn’t come naturally to everyone, but those who can, can inspire others.

And if I can help inspire even one person to think like a thrifty, creative student then that might save one more piece of vintage embroidered textile from oblivion, or prevent one more lovingly handmade beautiful object from ending up in landfill.

All these pictures show vintage Bengali kantha quilts from precious collections hung as art, but tell me your creative, thrifty “art” projects!
What else have you hung on a wall as art?

It just might inspire someone else 🤗

Guess what I just unpacked from the moving boxes…🤗🤗🤗

If you’ve hung around here long enough you’ll know:

👉 A) We’re well overdue a kantha drop! If you’ve browsed the website recently you may have noticed the tumbleweed rolling gracefully across it 💨🏜️ (Sorry about that but I’ve been busy playing with power tools trying to get the new studio workable ⚒️)

👉 B) You need to be on the mailing list to get an early preview

👉 C) Drops happen Saturday mornings 9am GMT for anyone on the mailing list. Anything left goes live the next day

So make a note in the diary for SATURDAY 23RD MAY

I’m still juggling an incomplete studio, your usual cushion/ bedspread orders and a bunch of stock to wash and photograph at home so hopefully 🤞🤞🤞 this monster collection will all get photographed in time…

…but anything I can’t get done by then will get released the following weekend.

If you’re already on the mailing list I love you 🫶. If not and you’re craving some absolutely unique colour, texture, authenticity and one-of-a-kind handmade textile treasure in your life then get on it, the link’s up top in bio. (No fees, no subscription, no spam, unsubscribe anytime)

Happy Friday 😍😍

Building a business sometimes means…..

Yes, BUILDING!

And dusting, cleaning, painting, demolishing and putting wheels on everything…

And bashed fingers, torn muscles, caffeine sweats, broken nails, sore knees, cutting the dried paint out of your hair because you’re too tired to wash it… but this is my getting-sh*t-done happy place and it will be worth it 🤗

And I still think that this huge leap of faith into this space with room to grow is the right thing for us right now 🤞

Because I really believe that unique, handmade, vintage and authentic products are the way forward, not just for Biggs and Hill but for anyone craving individuality in a mass-produced world of decor.

I don’t think I’m deluded 😬🤔 Are you with me on this?

So over the next week or so I will be starting to sort stock and seeing what to include in our

👉MOVING IN SALE!👈

Because now I can see what textiles have been languishing in boxes for months, what we need to move on from and what feels right to keep moving forward with.

And yes we’re well overdue a Kantha drop too so that’ll be happening too! (They’re staying obvs)

For now thank you for all the support and encouragement🙏 Know that every like, comment and share gets a tired little jig at my end.

03/05/2026

What happens when you take a leap of faith in your own business?
When you’ve outgrown your kitchen table and have soooooo many ideas, designs and cool stuff to share?

Awesome things - hopefully 😬🤞🤞🤗

April was a month full of all the usual plus exciting new possibilities 🤗

Beautiful vintage textiles, a new hanging rail kit, keys to the new studio and a lot (LOT) of dusting

For now it’s a lot of painting, building, prepping the new studio and still running a business in between it all.

There are still boxes of vintage textiles to clean, photograph and list, a new hanging rail kit to promote, vintage products to source, cushions to make, kanthas to upcycle and things to turn into wall art….

👉Follow along for a progress update on the new studio and what we’ll be sourcing and selling from here!👈

The plans are vague but it will involve unique, eclectic and vintage things that bring a bit of joy and creativity to a home 🤩

I love your ideas, tell me what you want to see? What can’t you find anywhere else? What inspo are you looking for? Maybe it’s something we can do from here!!
