Going away over the bank holiday? Your containers can manage a week without a plant sitter, if you set them up before you go.

The night before you leave: soak everything until water runs from the base. Then move pots off the hottest spots into part shade, and group them together so they shade each other and the wind gets to fewer surfaces. Pick or deadhead anything that is ready, so plants put energy into growing rather than setting seed while you are gone.

A grouped, shaded, properly soaked container loses water far more slowly than one baking alone in the middle of the patio.

Late August is when container gardens finally look like the picture on the seed packet. Tomatoes colouring up, herbs gone bushy, the salad box on its third cutting.

The gravel layer in the bottom of your planter is not doing what you think it is.

Water does not move cleanly from fine compost into coarse gravel. It hangs above the stones until the soil is fully saturated, so the wettest layer sits exactly where the roots are. Drainage gets worse, not better.

A single square of landscape mesh over the drainage holes does the real job. Compost stays in, water runs free.

The seed packets all say spring, but late August still earns its keep.

Sown in a container this week, these will all crop before the cold: salad leaves and rocket in three to four weeks, radishes in about four, spinach and chard for autumn picking, spring onions for late autumn. Winter lettuce can follow under cover next month.

The trick is little and often. A short row now, another in a fortnight, and the salad bowl stays full into October instead of everything arriving at once.

Trelush is a young name from an old workshop.

The family firm behind it has been building wooden housing in Kent since 1982. In 2024, forty-odd years of working with timber turned to garden planters. Same workshop, same sawdust, same people.

Every planter is cut, built and treated here in Kent, then despatched straight to your garden. It is not a big operation. That is rather the point.
