So I think it's time to officially say hi! :)
My name is Beata, or B. if you like, and some of you already know me. Some met me through my work for 7 years as a graphic designer and print manager at the Minuteman Press in Redditch.
But some changes and challenges in my life pushed me to a bold (or, as I should probably think - crazy) decision, which should help me to have a bigger control of what is happening around me, and will help me to bring back the home/work balance.
So this year I'm starting a big and challenging adventure. And it's not just a flight (first in 7 years from the UK!!馃), to grab some warmth in the Portuguese sun, to greet the New Year boosted by that energy, and forget about a challenging past.
I called that adventure Flyers by Night.
It is my very own print shop and design studio, which will allow me to carry on with what I love, and what I've been doing actively as a professional for 15 years. But also (and I can't explain how proud I am) I'm creating a space for my oldest daughter, Wik, to learn and start her dream job, by my side, learning from my experience and advice. Her attention to detail and the effort she put into work experience in Minuteman, made me realize how many young and talented people, especially after art-oriented education, are struggling to find work where they can use their skills and passion to secure a decent living.
I hope in the near future I will be able to teach and train more teenagers/young adults to show them how much joy the right job can bring.
So, as you can now imagine, 'Flyers' won't just be another, classic printing place.
As a basis for the business, we will be doing what I can and know best - corporate and personal printing: from business stationery, banners & signage, flyers (obviously 馃榿), booklets & brochures, and whatever your company might need, by the bespoke wedding stationery, greeting cards & postcards, calendars, mugs and t-shirts, to posters, canvases, and personalized gifts, and local souvenirs like fridge magnets, key rings, and walking trails/historical guides.
That should keep the business going and allow us to expand in the direction which I think is quite needed in our town. Redditch has the potential to become a more touristic, lively town. Thanks to all the efforts of Redditch BID, Reimagine Redditch, AHead of Well-being Community Interest Company, and many more big and small community-run organizations, projects and individuals, which I had the opportunity to meet, observe and more or less be involved thanks to my work, I noticed a positive change in our Town last few years.
I would like to bring my skills to use and add some more bricks to build the future of Redditch.
I met, over all those years, amazing artists, local musicians, photographers, make-up artists and crafters, who put their creations in the drawer, instead of sharing them with the public. If my new unit will have enough space (and the one I'm looking into does!), it will allow me to create an art hub, which anyone could use. To expose all of my talented customers to a wider public, free of charge. Also, a place where you can share your ideas with people specializing in different fields, to merge ideas and collaborate.
I would like to help with the advertising of all the events and initiatives, to promote art as a part of our lives, not only a thing we can use once a year at Christmas markets.
Also, I personally think, as a mum of 4, that those days it is very challenging on a daily basis to have some quality time with kids in our busy lives. But it is so important! That is why l want to make Flyers by Night unique and a bit different to other print shops. I will arrange a craft area for children (under parental/guardian control for safety reasons), teens and adults. Space to socialize, where anyone can come and use whatever I can gather to reuse, with all necessary and optional tools and machines. To have some fun and learn new things, after school or in the early evenings, when there's nothing else left to do.
I know the beginnings are never easy, but now I'm finally feeling ready for it, and I'm full of good thoughts.
I'm still in the process of finding and preparing the right unit, which might take a bit longer than I was hoping, but now when I can officially start taking orders, and looking for investors/grants, I hope I will quickly gather finances to make that big dream come true.
At the moment, I might need a bit longer to deal with some jobs. But still, most of the printing and finishing I will be able to sort out with 1-2 day turnaround, including delivery or pre-arranged appointment for collection.
I appreciate all the good thoughts and advice many of you have already shared with me.
So now it's time to get to work! :)
