Small local businesses are the heartbeat of our communities—and right now, they need us more than ever.

In places like Richmond, it’s the independently owned cafés, family-run restaurants, unique shops, and welcoming pubs that give the town its character. They’re not just places we visit; they’re where we connect, unwind, celebrate, and support our neighbours. Every cup of coffee, every meal, every small purchase keeps someone’s passion alive and sustains local livelihoods.

But the current economic climate is putting real pressure on these businesses. Rising costs, changing habits, and ongoing uncertainty mean many are struggling just to stay open. And if they disappear, Richmond won’t be the same. The charm, the individuality, the sense of community—these aren’t things big chains can replace.

Supporting local doesn’t have to mean spending more—it can be as simple as choosing the independent café over a chain, recommending your favourite shop to a friend, or leaving a positive review. Small actions, multiplied across a community, make a real difference.
If we want Richmond to continue thriving, we need to show up for the businesses that make it special. Because without them, the town as we know it simply won’t survive.
