The Nutmeg Company

The Nutmeg Company The Nutmeg Company focuses on three-dimensional cross stitch projects. Half our range is stitched on aida fabric and half on perforated paper.

We design miniature houses, keepsakes, Christmas decorations, gift bags and boxes and greetings cards. All our designs are cross stitched, but we also use backstitch and some designs have french knots or beads on them as well. We try to make sure that all our designs work as free standing ornaments, or have a practical use, and we offer kits suitable for beginners as well as more experienced stitchers.

Making greetings cards is practical and enjoyable! Here are some more ‘how to’ pictures to show the completion process. We’re using a card called ‘Off the beaten track’ and when all the stitching is complete, the first step is to cut out the design all around the outside edge. The chart has a cutting line marked on it to help you. Using sharp scissors, the next step is to cut all around the upper part of the central oval design - this part will stand up when your card is complete. Finally, the plain backing card provided in the kit is stuck to the back of the stitched card and trimmed to fit. Press in the folds marked on the chart and your card is ready to give to someone.
We also have a range of smaller cards, which we call the Blue Lights, because they can be stitched in a hurry! Here are our Sail Away and Guiding Light cards - once stitched they are cut out in the same way and backed with plain card. Finally a strut is made with an additional piece of plain card, and stuck to the back to make it stand.
Any questions? We’re always delighted to help with queries. Enjoy your stitching! cards .

Time for another set of ‘How to’ pictures. This time we’re featuring one of our Doodle Cottages - Little Dell Cottage.
Once the stitching is complete, the walls, roof, chimney and base are mounted on plastic canvas pieces, which are cut to size and shape and included in the kit. The walls are ladder stitched together and the chimney prepared. After lacing the stitched chimney to the plastic canvas pieces, we usually put a pencil inside it to keep it steady while we sew up the side seam. It is then attached to the side wall. Once the cottage walls are stitched together, the roof goes on, fitting it around the chimney. The whole thing is then attached to the base. This design has a little silver coloured mouse included in the kit and that is sewn to the base as well.
If you don’t want to add the chimney, instructions are given to complete the cottage without it - it still looks great!

Now that we’re having more springlike weather our showroom is open and we’re meeting some wonderful people again! In recent days the Blue Light cards have been popular, particularly Midnight and the Moon and Lily of the Valley - a spring flower we hope to see in the next few weeks. Attention has also been focused on our penguins and the Christmas Tree Cottage, (on the left of the two cottages shown here), has been singled out from the village group on display by the door. If you’re in the area, do drop in and say hello, but if you’re making a special trip please ring first, just in case we were closed that day.

At Nutmeg we specialise in three dimensional cross stitch and we use it in many different ways - some practical and some ornamental. We design lots of houses - some based on real places, like the Smugglers Rest Cottage and some fantasy pieces like the Duck Doodle Cottage - (we do know ducks don’t live in houses with chimneys!) - and Abracadabra, the magic shop. On the practical side, we have boxes in different sizes and picture frames, like the Sew Delft box and Sweet briar picture frame and miniature box shown here. We also have sewing accessories. Here’s our Sew Deco needle book but we have other pieces and designs in this range too. And we can’t forget Christmas! What better time to use your skills to produce decorations to delight! Here’s our Gingerbread Chapel, a Christmas tree for a Winter Village and a very special Christmas Castle. What stories you can tell from these pieces! Whatever you’re doing, the most important thing is to enjoy your stitching - especially in these difficult times when it can be therapeutic if you’re feeling stressed. We wish all our stitchers every blessing.

Just this week we were asked about the use of 18-count aida in some of our designs. This small count means we can add interesting details in an appropriate scale. One of the most satisfying aspects of design is dreaming up little things to add to the character of a piece. This is seen particularly in our little Pantomime Houses. Here, Baby Bear takes his toy train along when the three bears go out for a walk while the porridge is cooling and a group of musical mice practice by the Christmas tree, watched by a cat. Let’s be kind and suggest that the cat is a music lover rather than in search of supper! On our Penguin Hall piece a bashful penguin gives his lady-love a gift, watched by two gossiping penguins from an upper window and a beautiful new Porsche waits outside the Shoe Shop - Exclusive Shoes. The shop owner must be doing well! It’s great fun to tell stories with our stitching, don’t you think?

Have you got a special event taking place this year? If you’re thinking about stitching a card for something special you might like our Celebration Cards. There are 8 colour-ways and although some colours are linked to certain anniversaries, the instructions in the kits include alphabets and numbers, so you can use any card for any event. The ‘how-to’ pictures show the stitched card being cut out and mounted on plain card to complete it. Envelopes are provided in the kit to protect your work until the lucky recipient opens it!

A HOUSEKEEPING MESSAGE AND A WORD TO STITCHERS IN THE U.S.

We’re great fans of penguins at Nutmeg, so here’s a detail from Penguin Hall. They’re getting ready for Christmas - we’re trying to catch up!

First the housekeeping - if you ring us you may hear a strange message saying your call is being monitored. We’re currently switching over to a digital system and it’s throwing up all sorts of challenges! We hope to remove this message but don’t worry if you ring us and hear it - we haven’t been taken over by Big Brother!

We were so sad when the President’s decision to impose a 15% tariff on goods going to the US
meant we could no longer accept orders from there, but several stitchers contacted us to see if it would be possible to offer a bespoke service. If you would like to take advantage of this, please email us at [email protected] and tell us what you would like. We can then quote you a price and arrange payment through PayPal.

Enjoy the lead up to Christmas wherever you are - all good wishes to all stitchers!

At last our Christmas Castle is available and you can find it on our website in the Christmas Ornaments section! We’re also adding two more pieces to our range of fantasy Doodle Cottages. Duck cottage has a whole family of ducks on the walls - a mother with her ducklings and young drakes strutting around the garden. Owl Cottage has an owl perched on an old tree and is worked in autumnal shades. Neither of these cottages have a little mouse bead for the garden - (the mice didn’t want to share with ducks and owls!) - but Duck Cottage has lovely blue forget-me-not beads placed around the front door and Owl Cottage has a little owl bead - you can see it in our picture.

We hope you like these new pieces. Do contact us if you have any questions - we always love hearing from you!
