F. Meyer (20th Century)

Portrait of Empress Maria Alexandrovna, after Franz Xaver Winterhalter
Lovely Picture, housed in an ornate gilt frame

Image size: 100 x 74.5 cm

This elegant portrait, executed in the style of the celebrated court painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter, captures Empress Maria Alexandrovna (1824–1880), the first wife of Emperor Alexander II of Russia. Rendered with exquisite detail and restrained grace, the work reflects Winterhalter’s romantic treatment of European nobility soft lighting, fine textures, and a serene dignity that conveys both power and delicacy.
The artist F. Meyer demonstrates remarkable control of tone and fabric, from the lustrous silks of the Empress’s gown to the gentle modelling of her expression. The sitter’s composed posture and elaborate jewellery underscore her imperial stature, while the warm, muted palette imbues the work with a timeless, classical charm.
Presented in a richly carved gilt frame, this painting stands as both a tribute to Winterhalter’s mastery and a fine example of 20th-century academic portraiture.
Qualifier:
A distinguished and graceful reproduction of one of the most iconic Winterhalter portraits, this work by F. Meyer combines historical reverence with painterly finesse, a striking addition to any collection of European aristocratic portraiture.

Antique Indian Miniature Painting of Krishna: 18th century

Krishna on Nari Ashva (composed of female attendants as a horse), before a naturalistic landscape, gouache, undated.
Watercolour, gouache and graphite on medium slightly textured cream laid paper. The colours are made from natural materials vegetable dye and stones traditional in old Indian paintings.

The Kandarpa Ashwa or Nari Ashva (or woman-horse) is a stunning and rare painting from India. The inspiration for the image of Nari Ashva comes from the book Rasa Panchaka by Divakara Das of Orissa. the Gopis are making a vehicle of love (the horse) and inviting their Lord Krishna to ride on it.
The Kandarpa theme is essentially the love theme, sometimes with erotic overtones, of Pattachitra depicting various imageries from Raas Leela. This theme involves the Gopis (consorts) whose bodies are arranged in such a manner as to create the impression of a supportive horse transporting their Lord while Krishna rides joyfully holding his flute.

Paint losses throughout. Small pin holes are visible when held to the light. Small nicks, tears and losses throughout the border. The reverse shows small paper patch repairs.

Size 21 x 15 cm

An unusual find in our collection of pictures. These pictures are painted onto the glass and viewed through the opposite side of the pane. The technique is thought to have originated in eastern Europe during the Middle Ages. In the 18th century, however, it was common for these works to be created in China for export to Europe.
