This tree was originally planned as a 22-foot twin-stem, twin-dragon sculpture.

But good carving isn’t about forcing big ideas onto timber — it’s about working with it.

After inspection, internal cavities and the timber species meant the original scale wouldn’t have been structurally sound long-term. So the design has been reworked to around half the size — safer, stronger, and built to last.

This time-lapse shows the Procreate design process.

For every commission I send:
• A clear design
• The design within the tree silhouette
• The design overlaid onto the actual tree

Every limb, wing and tail must fit inside the natural boundaries of the wood. The pose has to complement the grain, the shape, and the strength of the timber.

When the form fits the wood — the sculpture feels like it was always there.

Yin & Yang – Drinking Horse Bust

Seen last year at Longines Global Champions Tour and now settled into its new home.

This piece was carved from a single section of spalted wood, chosen specifically for its natural contrast — light and dark, calm and power. Areas of decay were removed and the form shaped around the timber’s history, allowing the grain to guide the final sculpture rather than forcing it into submission.

One of the things I love about working in wood is its honesty.

A bronze sculpture, however beautiful, can always be cast again.
This piece can never be copied.

Its grain, colour, movement and character exist only once. That uniqueness is not added at the end — it is embedded from the very beginning.

True one-off work. Always shaped by the wood. Always unrepeatable.
