Penelope Jane Kitchen Design

Penelope Jane Kitchen Design Independent Kitchen Designer I love my role as a kitchen designer and have worked in the industry for over 20 years for several different studios.

I am now working as a freelance designer, using my skills to help clients achieve their dream kitchens, utility/boot rooms and bedrooms. I offer a two tier service:

- After an initial no obligation discussion I offer a service, for a pre-agreed fee, whereby I survey the area you wish to renovate, or scale from architects drawings, discuss in detail your specific needs and preferences, and create

tailored design solutions using a specialist kitchen design computer programme. After presenting I will then provide a full set of plans, elevations, and perspective drawings which you can show to any prospective kitchen retailers for pricing.
- As a second stage, should you require it, I can recommend a number of trusted kitchen retailers from whom I can obtain quotes. As a freelance designer I am not tied to any one kitchen company, therefore I can make sure we find a company to suit your expectations and budget requirements. If you are interested in my services please drop me a message.

This project was in a beautiful thatched cottage, so it was important to keep the traditional feel of the kitchen but also improve functionality and give it a fresh, light feel. The original space felt cluttered and dark (see original photos) and with a small space to play with it was challenging, but working with Mr and Mrs E, who had a clear idea of what they wanted to achieve, made it sucessful.
The builders blocked up an unused doorway making way for a simple galley kitchen, the In-fame wooden cabinets are handmade and hand painted in a soft cream and the large double bowl butler sink is both stunning and practical. The freestanding cupboard, painted in a sunny yellow colour, houses a large integrated fridge, drawers and larder. The finishing touches, painting the ceiling beams a lighter colour and adding an oak wooden floor, complete the traditional look.

I have worked with a number of clients who are building their own dream houses, I love these projects as I become involved very early on in the design process and I am able to design the space around the kitchen, moving window and door positions to suit the perfect layout.

The brief for Mr & Mrs L’s kitchen was for a modern look but they didn’t want it to feel too clinical or cold, so I suggested a handle less kitchen with Matt white doors and Walnut end panels and plinth, to add warmth.
With a large family and a love for entertaining I specified two single ovens, a combination microwave and warming drawer, all conveniently situated at eye level. The large island is the perfect size for a vented induction hob with built-in extraction, masses of useful storage in the deep oversized drawers and a seating area on the opposite side.
We used a mix of a mix of work surfaces to add interest - Granite on the island and by using Corian on the sink run we were able to integrate the sink and draining grooves seamlessly in to the worktop.

I am delighted to present Mr & Mrs H’s recently installed kitchen, just a few finishing touches left to add, including the island lighting and antique mirror behind the range. The quality of the furniture in this bespoke, handmade kitchen is second to none. The doors are In-frame for that traditional feel and the main colour of the cabinetry is from Little Greene – Pearl (Colour Dark 169), to tie the colours together the cabinetry on the oversized island is in Walnut to give a rich and sophisticated feel.

It was a pleasure to work with Mr & Mrs H as they had some strong starting ideas to help create this amazing space, including the large Villeroy & Boch double bowl ceramic sink, adding two dishwashers and recycling bins to an area to create a functional clearing away space, separate from the main cooking area. The original chimney breast space was used to house the striking Tangerine coloured Lacanche Range, the cooker top gives the option to cook using gas, electric induction and an electric griddle plate. Tall storage either side of the chimney breast has pocket doors which fold in on themselves cleverly hiding the coffee machine, whilst the below extra wide storage drawers allow easy, visible access to cookware.

The island is a fabulous food preparation area complete with small prep sink and Quooker Boiling water tap, the main work surface is Silestone 30mm Quartz in with a solid walnut breakfast bar to the back of the island, the island also boasts a Siemens built-under single oven with steam function and a beer fridge. Another criteria of the design was a large fridge/freezer and extensive wine storage, this was achieved using Siemens iQ700 built in appliances which are flush with the cupboards either side and really make a statement.

The Patinated brass handles and taps, vibrant tangerine bar stools and clever lighting are the finishing touches that really add to the luxurious feel for the whole room. I loved working on this project and hope my clients enjoy their kitchen for many years to come..

On visiting site last week I was delighted to see my latest project being installed, this kitchen was a joy to design as the extra large room gave lots options to play with, finally specifying this fantastic Walnut island as the main focal point. The carpenters working on site are doing an amazing job, the bespoke handmade furniture is beautifully finished and I cant wait to see the final result.

The first picture below shows the computer generated image used during the design process. I will post more pictures once the work surface has been installed.

The main challenge of this project was assisting Mr & Mrs M in making the decision of whether to switch the working kitchen space and dining area around. Using 3D CAD imagery I presented several different designs, demonstrating the different options, and the decision was made to leave the kitchen under the beautifully vaulted ceiling. Their wish list included having the single oven and combination microwave housed in a tall unit at eye level, large built in fridge/freezer and a tall larder cupboard, all were achieved and by linking the sink and hob with a continuous Quartz worktop the kitchen became a much more ergonomic space. I love the colour of the Shaker style doors- Farrow & Ball - Card Room Green - which Mr & Mrs M chose, and the stunning ceiling lights from Neptune. The finished result looks amazing and completely in character with this beautiful thatched home, proving you can have all the functions of a modern kitchen without losing that traditional feel.

Mrs W Kitchen Design July 2024

This project was great to work on as the client had strong vision for her kitchen but required assistance in its ex*****on. After taking the initial brief and surveying the exisitng kitchen I was able to present to Mrs W, using computer generated imagery, a few alternative designs before together agreeing on the final layout.
The finished result gave her the walk-in larder that was desired, plenty of extra wide deep drawer storage and a striking yet practical island in a gorgeous charcoal grey.
Following discussions regarding budget I introduced Mrs W to one of my trusted suppliers, who provided the high level of product and service required. The supplier and I worked with Mrs W’s builder to help manage the installation of the kitchen and the end result is stunning.

See the below finished photos and some before shots.
