Selkie & Stone Studio Handcrafted Marbelux décor & home fragrance, inspired by the sea and made in Shetland.

I thought I’d just explain a little bit about Selkie & Stone as I’ve had a few comments recently about the use of AI.

Yes, Selkie & Stone is a real small business.

The things I’m making are real. I design and make the actual products myself, and I’m building the business from scratch. I’m currently making my Marbelux pieces, and I’ll also be bringing candles and wax melts into the business.

When it comes to some of my pictures of illustrations, yes, I do use AI to help me create them. I have ideas of what I want things to look like, and AI is one of the tools I use to help bring those ideas to life. I’m still learning how to use it and definitely don’t claim to be an expert 😂.

The actual photos I take of Shetland’s landscapes and landmarks are my own photographs. I use those and add my own text and information to them.

The map I recently shared is an illustration, created to show some of the different areas and places around Shetland that have inspired Selkie & Stone. It isn’t meant to be an actual geographical map.

The Shetland history, places and folklore that I’m using as inspiration are real, and I’m taking the time to research things properly because I really don’t want to be putting made-up information out there.

I’m just a small business owner having a go, learning as I go and trying to create something that I’m really proud of. ❤️

So yes, some of the artwork you see will be AI-assisted, but the actual business and the handmade products are very real. 🥰

Thank you to everyone who has supported me so far, followed the page, shared my posts or just taken the time to have a look at what I’m creating. It really does mean a lot. 🤍

✨ THE SELKIE & STONE INSPIRATION MAP ✨

A little journey around the islands that inspire Selkie & Stone. 🌊🦭🪨

Shetland is full of places where sea, stone, history, folklore and language come together — and I wanted to create a map celebrating some of those places and the stories they inspire.

From the dramatic cliffs of Eshaness, the historic harbour of Lerwick, and the ancient Clickimin Broch, to St Ninian’s Isle, West Burra, Sullom Voe, Nesting and Lunna, each place has its own character and has helped shape the ideas behind my collections.

Further north, Yell and Unst bring their own wild landscapes, while Foula, standing apart to the west, carries an especially fascinating connection to Shetland’s linguistic heritage.

✨ The Twelve Collections of Shetland ✨

Each location represents a different thread of inspiration:

🌊 Lerwick Harbour — The Heart of Tradition
🏰 Scalloway Castle — Whispers of the Past
🌿 St Ninian’s Isle — Sanctuary of the Sea
🪨 Clickimin Broch — Guardians of Time
🌊 Eshaness Cliffs — Wild & Untamed
⚓ Sullom Voe — Industrial Heritage & Hidden Strength
🌿 West Burra — Ancient & Enchanted
🏡 Lunna — Secrets of the Sea
🌾 Nesting — Where Sea & Sky Meet
🌊 Foula — Raw. Remote. Remarkable.
🌬️ Yell — Island of Flow & Freedom
🌊 Unst — Edge of the World

And because Selkie & Stone is about bringing a little piece of Shetland into your home, I’ve imagined each collection with its own colours, textures, stories and hidden treasures — including crystals chosen to complement the feeling of each place. ✨

This isn’t intended to be a navigational map, but an illustrated map of inspiration — a celebration of the places, landscapes and stories that make Shetland so special.

Where the wild meets the magical. ✨

There’s something about Shetland that never quite feels ordinary.

The sea, the stone, the wild landscapes and those incredible skies are a constant source of inspiration for me.

This is the feeling behind Selkie & Stone — handmade home décor inspired by the wild beauty of Shetland, with a little bit of magic woven into every piece. 🐚🪨✨

I’m so excited to share more of the journey with you. 🤍

🌊 Selkie & Stone is now on TikTok! 🌊

While the work is being done at home, my making has had to go on hold for a little while… but that doesn’t mean Selkie & Stone has stopped! 🤍

I’m using this time to research Shetland, its history, folklore and all the things that inspire my pieces.

Once my home is back to normal, keep an eye on my TikTok because I’ll be sharing the making process, behind-the-scenes and hopefully lots of new pieces coming to life. 🪨🌊✨

I’d love for you to come and follow along! ❤️

🌊 A little bit of Shetland history that is inspiring Selkie & Stone…

While I’ve got work being done in the house at the moment, my making has had to go on hold for a little while. So rather than sitting doing nothing, I’ve decided to use the time to do something I’ve really wanted to do for Selkie & Stone — research more about Shetland and the stories behind the places around us. 🤍

I’ve been looking into different parts of Shetland and the stories and history behind them, especially the Norse connections, old place names and folklore.

Today I’ve been reading about Scalloway, and I love finding out all these things about places I’ve visited since moving to Shetland but never really knew the history behind.

The name Scalloway comes from the Old Norse Skálavágr, and the area was also connected to the old Ting, where people would gather to discuss important matters and laws.

Then there’s Scalloway Castle, which has a much darker side to its history. It was built in 1599 for Patrick Stewart, Earl of Orkney and Shetland, and forced labour was used in its construction.

There’s just so much to discover here, and the more I look into it, the more fascinated I become. 😊

And this is exactly the sort of thing I want to bring into Selkie & Stone. 🪨🌊

I don’t just want to make something because I think it looks pretty. I want to know the place, the story, the colours and the history behind the inspiration.

So while I’m waiting to get back to making, I’ll be doing plenty of researching and sharing some of the things I find along the way. 🤍

Is there somewhere in Shetland you’d like me to have a look into next? 👀

A little update from Selkie & Stone 🤍

Things are a little quieter on the making side just now as I’ve got some work being done at home, so I can’t get stuck into making my pieces at the moment.

But that doesn’t mean I’ve stopped working on Selkie & Stone! 🌊

I’m using the time to do something I’ve really wanted to do from the start — researching Shetland’s history, places, old language, Norse connections and folklore, and thinking about how I can bring all of that into my collections.

I want the pieces I make to have a reason behind them. Not just a nice colour or shape, but a little bit of Shetland’s story in them. 🪨🌊✨

So while I can’t be pouring and making at the moment, there’s still plenty happening behind the scenes.

I’ve got lots of ideas for the collections and I’m really excited to get back to making and start bringing them to life. 🤍

Is there a particular place, story or bit of Shetland history you’d love to see inspire a Selkie & Stone collection?

I might just add it to my list… 👀

Jarlshof — where thousands of years of Shetland history meet the sea. 🌊

One of the places that has really been inspiring me lately is Jarlshof.

What I find amazing about Jarlshof is that this isn’t just one piece of history. There are more than 4,000 years of human settlement here, from the Neolithic and Bronze Age, through the Iron Age and Pictish period, to the Norse settlement and much later buildings.

The Norse history is a part I’m particularly interested in. Norwegian settlers arrived in Shetland around the 9th century, and Jarlshof still has some incredibly well-preserved Norse longhouses and farm buildings.

And that’s something I find fascinating about Shetland. Our history isn’t only Scottish — for around 600 years, Shetland was part of the Norse world and under Norwegian rule, before the islands were pawned to the Scottish Crown in 1469.

That Scandinavian heritage is still woven through Shetland today — in our place names, language, dialect, traditions and the stories passed down through the generations. Norn developed from Old Norse and was spoken in Shetland for centuries after the islands came under Scottish rule.

It’s the stone, the sea, the history, the folklore and these Scandinavian connections that are starting to inspire the collections I’m creating for Selkie & Stone.

I don’t just want to make pieces that look coastal. I want there to be a little story behind them — something that connects them back to the places, people and heritage of Shetland. 🤍

And when I think about how closely Shetland’s history connects us to Norway, Scandinavia and the wider Nordic world, it makes me even more excited about where this could take Selkie & Stone.

There are so many stories still to discover. 🌊✨

Have you ever visited Jarlshof? Or is there another part of Shetland’s history you’d love me to explore next?

There’s actually a lot more behind Selkie & Stone than just making pretty home décor 🤍

I really want to bring some of the history, stories and magic of Shetland into the pieces I make.

I’ve been looking into the places around Shetland, our Norse history, old stories, folklore and even some of the old language and dialect, and I’m hoping to create different collections inspired by them. 🌊🪨✨

So when I’m choosing colours, shapes and even names for pieces, I want there to be a little story behind them.

Some will be inspired by the sea, some by the land and stone, some by our history and some by the folklore and magic of Shetland. 🦭

I’m still figuring it all out and there’s lots of experimenting to do, but I’m really enjoying creating something that feels connected to where I live.

Hopefully, when you pick up a Selkie & Stone piece, it will feel like you’re taking home a little piece of Shetland too. 🤍

There are so many stories to discover, and I can’t wait to start sharing them with you. 🌊✨

A little behind-the-scenes at Selkie & Stone… 🌊

Today has been all about testing colours, experimenting with marbling and seeing how different combinations come to life once they’re out of the mould.

I’ve been playing with soft stormy blues, slate greys and warm earthy neutrals — all inspired by the colours of Shetland’s sea, stone and wild landscapes. 🌊🪨

Some experiments work beautifully… and some teach me what to do differently next time! 🤍

That’s part of the magic of handmade — every piece is a little experiment, and no two will ever be exactly the same.

I’m still refining these colours before they become part of the Selkie & Stone collection, but I think we’re onto something special. ✨

Which colour would you choose — stormy blue or warm earthy stone? 🌊

Every piece begins with a place. 🤍

Today, we’re taking you to Mavis Grind — a place where Shetland feels beautifully wild, ancient and wonderfully connected to the sea.

The landscape around us is a constant source of inspiration for Selkie & Stone. The colours of the water, weathered stone, windswept hills and little treasures found along the shore all find their way into the pieces we create.

We’re not just making home décor.

We’re creating little pieces of the islands, inspired by the places, stories and magic that make Shetland so special. 🌊

This is where stone, sea and story meet.
