Learn to knit on July 4th! If you, or someone you know wants to learn to knit join me for a workshop at my studio on Saturday 4th 12-2:30pm. There will only be 4 spaces available so book in advance on the YarnTings website.

Video shows me, a mixed heritage woman with a short Afro wearing jeans and a dark red mesh top sitting on a yellow pouffe at the doorway to my studio. Behind me you can see lots of colourful yarn fibre and plants.

I’ve realised that when things feel out of my control, I make blankets. The first one was my first ever piece of knitting, when I was pregnant with my child, several years ago. There have been a couple made for babies, with no concern, just love and anticipation. I’m making a blanket to raffle off to raise money for my friend who’s very ill, and a new mum.
When I started my Songs of Solidarity club last year, I made a blanket to be able to cover myself in colours inspired by artists who have spoken out against wrongs over the decades. And now I have learnt to crochet, thanks to (YarnTings new crochet teacher) I am now crocheting a new corner to corner blanket, using this year’s SOS batt club.

What’s nice about the fibre/batt club is that I get to be with the colour while spinning, and then again while using it to create an item of warmth and protection.

This was song number 1 for the club this year, which started in March. It’s Chumbawumba’s The day the N4z1 died’ and it’s been playing regularly in my head. The cool petrol blue, with hints of soft pale mauve and yellow red and brown shift in intensity as I crochet along, and that repetitive action, slowly building to something bigger and beautiful give me a powerful sense of calm.

It’s a rainy day, and things are a bit quieter than I’d like at chez YarnTings, but I gather great warmth and comfort in the people around me who make beautiful things and create wonderful spaces for play, laughter and joy.
Sunday saw and put on the most fabulous show with performances from juggling hats and juggling everything while tiny kids raved. I saw my friend Tay in the second video hang by their teeth for the first time, and was horrified and thrilled in equal measure.

We had our first class in the YarnTings studio taught by Julie from and on Thursday I got to see my friends and when Ollie and I went to see play swinging tunes and get the room dancing!

‘Reggae fi’ Peach’ by Linton Kwesi Johnson

We are staying close to home this month.
Linton Kwesi Johnson is a British Jamaican poet and musician who grew up in Brixton, south London. This song is a tribute to Blair Peach, who was killed during race riots in Southall, a few minutes walk away from where I write these words. Blair Peach was a teacher, who was marching against the National Front in West London in 1979. He was brutally beaten by police, and died of his injuries. A theme I find recurring in these songs, is how even though the world is so different to how it was 40 odd years ago, the police coming down hard on those trying to fight for peace and humanity continues.

If you would like to join the next instalment of the club, you can do by signing up on the website by 14th June.

These items are arrange ld around a laptop screen with the vinyl artwork on it. That artwork is shown upclose in image 2: a circle of soft sky blue, with a drawn palm tree to one side, and a wooden huts and the word ‘MANGO’ in a gradient from red at the top through to yellow then green. In black text to the right are the words ‘Linton Kwesi Johnson’ and in the centre the track listing under the works ‘Bass Culture’

Ok… it is WARM. I have managed to be in the studio today, just long enough to twist up these beautiful skeins of pure silk.

Beautifully soft and cool, they have been listed in the online shop, (YarnTings.com) there are two of each colour and one skein is 400m can do a camisole for up to a 42 in chest, like the one I’m wearing in the last pic, or a pure mesh pullover up to a ###L or a boat neck batwing up to an XXL

Or just get 2. Mix it up. I’m definitely enjoying being able to knit in this heat, not sure I’d be able to deal with a woolly one!

Images 1 & 2 are photos of my collection of shiny bright silk yarns in a rainbow of colours. Deep plum, through to reds, pinks, peach, butter yellow, lime green, mermaid turquoise, violet blue and turquoise and a blue grey/black. Dotted amongst this rainbow are variegated skeins of magenta, gold and turquoise, fire red and gold, and neon yellow and pink with black streaks, and finally a soft turquoise blue with flecks of orange and brown.

Image 3 is me, sweltering in a denim baseball cap in a peach camisole in knitted silk, a white shirt and headphones. Hand spun necklaces hang on a grid wall behind my head
