Last week we had the opportunity to buy some nice bits from a farm in Newquay, Cornwall.

5 Cornish granite staddle stones
2 Cornish granite rollers
1 giant cast iron pot
1 Grindstone

The two brothers John (66yrs) and Keith (84yrs) have been on this family farm since they where little boys, they both run the farm of cows and sheep together on their own.

The Staddle stones Keith bought in 34 years ago as a decoration, he paid £30 each for them. They have sat in a hedge buried with brambles and dirt since the day they came to the farm because they where scared someone would steal them!

The granite rollers are original to the farm and once made redundant became gate posts/wall ends.

The large cast Iron pot has a little story too, from what they recall, during the war the RAF used the farm heavily and brought lots of things in and built buildings all over the fields (most of which are still standing but derelict). They where unsure what it was used for by the army but they left it after the war and so their grandparents situated at the back door of the farmhouse next to the well, they would empty the water into this pot and it would be used to water the animals and people. When the well got filled in they placed it up in the field where It has been overgrown for many years until now.

The grind stone is original to the farm and the big frame it sat upon broke and ditched in one of the hedge rows. I walked past it several times and couldn't find it, John took me exactly to where he placed it years ago and sure enough it was there.

I was limited for space and couldn't buy all the things I wanted to. Maybe I'll return one day. These men have had a long hard life on the farm and every credit to them to keep working.

I'll be keeping some of these bits myself and some to sell on.

How long have these brass figures sat and watched people's lives go by? Sat in gardens? Pubs? Homes? Shops?
What stories could they tell?

I got gifted the brass rabbit when I purchased a millstone from Leyland. It was sat on the garage windowcill in the back garden, I mentioned how nice that was, and the man said, "You can have it, It was my mums before she passed."

It went straight on the dash in our old Ford transit and remained there until today...it's last exciting journeys where coming home from Exmoor on the back of a truck because the transit decided to die there, then it came to our new home on the back of a different truck where its been sat for almost a year.

Now it's sat up in my barn overlooking all my projects with some friends.
What will this rabbit see now? Will it watch me teaching our children skills with tools? Will it watch me until I'm old and grey?

These things are often overlooked, the story they hold, the life they have lived so far.

Things like this we dont own, its just our turn in keeping them.
