Attic Antiques

Attic Antiques Looking to rehome your family treasures? Attic Antiques have been helping Aberdeenshire families for over two decades.

Attic Antiques was founded in 2006 by Robert Cook after an initial career in museums and the heritage sector. Unlike most antiques dealers we don't have a shop but instead trade mostly online and at fairs. Because we don't have premises, we don't have high overheads and so we can give you the best prices for your antiques and collectables. We offer a friendly, personal service which includes home visits and valuations.

We took a trip to Victoria Park in Aberdeen today where a super cool trinket box has been set up! It's take one, leave one so we had to leave some cool antiques and collectables behind!

If you were a 19th century sailor who was away from your love and looking for the perfect gift, a rolling pin love token might be the very thing! Made by local glassworks, these full sized rolling pins were hand painted with a message and stuffed with sweets, soaps or other nice things. The idea was that once the contents had been used the rolling pin could then be used also. The one pictured came in this weekend and features a line from the chorus of an 18th century song - The Lass That Loved a Sailor -

The moon on the ocean was dimmed by a ripple
Affording a chequered delight;
The gay jolly tars passed a word for the tipple,
And the toast — for 'twas Saturday night:
Some sweetheart or wife he loved as his life
Each drank, and wished he could hail her:
But the standing toast that pleased the most
Was "The wind that blows,
The Ship that goes,
And the lass that loves a sailor!"

You'd think we just returned from the Far East today however these lovely Malaysian and Indian treasures turned up near Huntly! The rose bowl is silver and from a brief time of the Malaysian Federation (1950s) whereas the porcupine quill spice box is likely early 1900s and Ceylonese.

Rob was so impressed with Banff Museum he went back up today and donated the Banff horse harness piece we discovered. Made by Beattie of Low Street, the piece will now sit just a short walk away from where it was produced over 100 years ago.

Did you know the Victorians went through Pteridomania!? This odd occurrence had our ancestors coveting one thing in particular - putting it on everything from jewellery to pottery and clothing, making indoor miniature glasshouses for them and even botanical gardens to profit from them. What is Pteridomania? Fern Fever!

One man's war summed up in three images. These three postcards show an ambulance driver during the First World War from enlistment, to showing off his ambulance and then convalescing in hospital. There is a note on the back of one card which we're hoping to use to identify him.
