So much of what I create begins long before I’m working in the studio with clay and silver. It starts with a place, a feeling, a conversation, or a small inspiring moment that stays with me.
This sketch is from Vernazza in Cinque Terre. I was sitting and listening to the gentle sound of the water lapping against the fishing boats, watching the shades of blue and green shift with the light. The brightly coloured boats sat against the cliffs, where vineyards and little farms cling seemingly impossibly to the hillsides. Every so often, a train would emerge from the tunnels carved into the rock before disappearing again around the coastline. It all felt beautifully timeless, and I just sat there for hours absorbing it all.
I always carry scraps of paper and a pencil when I travel. The pressure of a sketchbook often gets to me, so I use scraps of paper, because the sketches are not meant to be perfect, however they help me notice details I might otherwise miss. They become little collections of memories, colours, textures and details that find their way into my work further down the line.
I’d love to share more of these pages with you, the places that inspire me, the stories they hold, and the journey from sketch to finished piece.
