Justin O'Brien Furniture Bespoke contemporary furniture design, manufacturing and installation. Justin O’Brien is a furniture maker with over twenty years’ experience.

He trained initially as a cabinet maker at Rycotewood College in Oxfordshire. Choosing to design furniture with a strong sculptural aesthetic, this lead to a brief career in set design and artistic direction within the film industry. He returned to his cabinet making roots some years later, working alongside a colleague from Rycotewood. Continually honing his individual take on design, he then wen

t on to work for a thriving joinery firm. Based near Henley on Thames, the firm had a large central and west London client base. It was within this industry environment that he discovered a passion for a design and construction process which embraced modern technology alongside handmade craft. At this point Justin began experimenting more with sheet materials such as plywood which lends itself perfectly to a component based style of design. Justin takes this further by utilising minor repetitive adjustment to create linear based but free flowing forms. Inspiration is taken from the natural world around us which resonates through much of his work today. In 2004 Justin began creating bespoke work which has led to his current status today commissioning pieces for a multitude of clients. Over the years Justin has broadened his horizons to include fitted suites and kitchens and has collaborated with numerous architects and interior designers. On moving to the South coast Justin was accepted into the much coveted Cass Foundation for Sculpture and has gained a more loyal following which includes the likes of Gordon and the late Dame Anita Roddick. A highly tuned and original eye for detail, Justin produces progressive, innovative pieces in harmony with the human condition and the spaces within which we find ourselves.

A day of truly mixed feelings......
Sadly, The Cass Foundation has now closed its gates for good. I owe Wilfred Cass so, so much! He gave me the confidence to pursue a career which I still love to this day.
I dropped by and picked up the last of my benches earlier, it was originally commissioned along with two others almost 16 years ago, time flies, as did its siblings.
I have since had the privilege of remaining on their artists listing along side the likes of Heatherwick, Gormley, Whiteread, Goldsworthy, Cragg, O’Connell, the list just goes on.
I have met some truly remarkable, lovely people and had an adventure or two in the meantime simply because he had faith in my work.
I say it again, I owe this man an awful lot!

A few pic's of a kitchen project I did a little while ago for some lovely clients. The brief was to create something with a contemporary country feel. This then led on to far more, including stairs, shower rooms, bedroom, office and tv snug. Here's just a little taste.
