Beautiful Ugly.
This piece was named after the piercingly poignant collection of songs, Beautiful Ugly, by remarkable musician, poet and philosopher, Captain of the Lost Waves – Shaun T Hunter.
On the delicate, classical proportions of the jar, crafted from a discarded piece of firewood, a crack is crudely but lovingly covered by a brutalist patch of distressed copper – an obviously alien but resonantly sympathetic material (copper beech). The crack was visible from the start but the deeper scar on the other side was hidden at the heart of the wood and only revealed as layers were peeled away. It also reveals itself deep inside the vessel.

Earth Jar 3, 10cm x 8cm. Ash with clay pigment stain. I love the way my earth pigment, made from local clay, works differently on each piece of wood and on different sections of the wood. I also like the natural symbiosis between the wood and the earth it grew in.

Spalted beech jar with distressed copper patch, 12cm x 8cm. I'm always amazed at how many different colours and features one small piece of wood can contain, once you look for them. From the firewood pile to a piece of art.
