Meet Chuck!! He’s Betty’s new counterpart! Follow along with me as I start a new sourdough starter from scratch. Here I am giving Chuck his first feeding of flour.

Come along with me as I attempt to start a brand new tiny starter. Sourdough starters are just two simple ingredients—flour and water. The magic is that the environment around us does the rest of the work. Wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria that are all around us feed on the carbohydrates in the flour and produce carbon dioxide. Let’s see how long it takes to get this new starter going.

Betty’s back! Here I talk a little about starter feeding ratios and starter maintenance. Often when people are starting their sourdough journeys they believe that feeding their starter is always at a 1:1:1 ratio (or equal parts flour, water and starter). But this just isn’t the case. Upping your flour and water will actually give you more flexibility with your baking schedule and keep your starter more balanced and less acidic. Happy baking!

Since stepping away from the corporate world, I’ve been moving toward what feels authentic to me. Part of that journey has been slowly completing my 200-hour yoga teacher training at .ca in Port Perry.

I started The Gathering Place because I wanted to find a way to thrive in community differently. Baking bread lights me up and calms my mind, there’s something meditative (or breaditative ✨) about creating something with my hands.

Teaching yoga feels like a natural extension of that same practice. Yoga has anchored my self-care for years, and as I’ve moved through my own reinvention, it’s become something I want to share.

I’m teaching my first Karma class on May 24th at 10:30 a.m. at Lotus Loft. These are donation-based community classes where your practice supports something greater, all net proceeds go to local charities in Port Perry. We come together on the mat and give back to our community.
