Let me introduce Spango, a stray from Skiathos. He’s the sweetest little cat and has become part of our Home Greek Home story, earning his name from his love of playing with string — spangos in Greek — in our garden.
Spango has used up eight of his nine lives. We found him at the side of the road after he’d suffered a traumatic head injury in a car accident. We called the Skiathos vets, who came into their clinic out of hours to assess him. They gave him less than a 20% chance of surviving the night and gently told us to expect the worst.
But Spango had other ideas. The vets made him comfortable and, with extraordinary care, did everything they could to get him back on his feet. Eleven days later we collected him — and since then he has gone from strength to strength. ❤️
Spango got a chance. We’d like to help give that same chance to other animals on Skiathos.
Veterinary care on the island is very fairly priced, but treating a stray can still be expensive. A stay like Spango’s would cost around €500, plus medication — a significant sum for the charities and individuals who work tirelessly to care for the island’s stray animals.
Spango’s own veterinary bills have been paid in full. Friends of Spango is about helping the next animal that needs that same chance. We’d like to raise a fund that can be used by Skiathos dog and cat charities, and those caring for strays, to access veterinary advice, treatment and emergency care when they need it. So if anyone finds an animal in distress they can take it to the vets in the knowledge that a check up or care or medication will be taken care of for as long as there is money in the pot.
Every penny raised will go specifically towards veterinary care for stray animals on SKIATHOS on a first come first served basis until the fund is spent.
As an added bonus we will be offering some little treats for the top donations that we receive between today and 1st October.
The highest donation will win a week’s stay for two (accommodation only) in our SKIATHOS town house featured on Home Greek Home in a mutually agreeable date in summer 27 or 28.
20 runners up will receive a priceless I’m a Friend of Spango T shirt posted somewhere in the uk.
