TropiBox Kochi unfolds through a series of interconnected levels and open spaces, where thoughtfully placed pavilions create moments of surprise while maintaining a sense of cohesion. With meticulous attention to detail, scale, and proportion, the design elevates the human experience. Drawing inspiration from Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, TAB has envisioned a seamless fusion of lush greenery and tropical modernism.

The key design challenge was to craft a home that balances privacy with connection—offering each resident their own retreat while fostering interaction. Organized through a vertical stacking strategy, the residence integrates gardens and glass walls between two concrete façades. This thoughtful configuration enhances the microclimate, inviting abundant daylight and natural ventilation into every room, while the alternating openings promote visual connection and engagement among family members.

The Clay Roof House by DRTAN LM Architect in Petaling Jaya is a sustainable reinvention of an old home, creatively centered on the reuse of salvaged Indian clay roof tiles.
Instead of being discarded, the tiles were converted into a dynamic, vertical facade screen on a bespoke steel rod system. This kinetic screen swivels to effectively manage the west-facing sun, drastically reducing solar gain while ensuring insulation and ventilation. Aesthetically, it provides a warm terracotta glow during the day and a "tremulous lighting effect" at night. The resulting home is a minimalist, light-filled cube that demonstrates a commitment to both innovation and sustainability.

A Luminous Veil: The Clay Roof House Reimagined
In the older, established suburbs of Petaling Jaya, the Clay Roof House by DRTAN LM Architect stands as a compelling study in sustainable innovation and aesthetic reinterpretation. What began as a plan to simply demolish and rebuild an old, dilapidated property on a small lot evolved into a deeply considered architectural narrative centered on resourcefulness.
The heart of this transformation lies in the ingenious reuse of a singular, salvaged material: the original, high-quality Indian clay roof tiles. Instead of discarding this sound material, the architects carefully removed, stored, and then redeployed the terracotta tiles not as a roof, but as a dynamic vertical facade screen.
Innovation in Sustainability and Sun Control
Facing the harsh morning and afternoon sun duensity of a west-facing orientation, the reuse of the dense clay tiles proved to be an ideal, sustainable solution for solar control. A bespoke system of vertical steel rods was designed to hold the tiles, allowing them to swivel and turn freely. This kinetic skin significantly reduces solar gain through the home's windows and glass doors, creating a beautifully insulated and well-ventilated internal environment.
Aesthetically, this animated clay screen offers more than just function. In the harsh sun, the terracotta glows with a warm orange hue. At night, with internal lights on, it transforms the house into a softly pulsating beacon, lending a "tremulous lighting effect" when viewed from the street.
The resulting structure is a functional, light-filled cube enclosed within this unique, protective layer of clay tile and lattice brickwork. The interiors embrace a purist, minimalist aesthetic—featuring simple lines, raw walls, and natural materials—that speaks to a quiet elegance. The house’s functional floor plan and "green" outer skins maximize sustainability.
The Clay Roof House is more than just a home; it’s a tangible testament to innovation and commitment—a celebration of how a material, once destined for the scrap heap, can be reimagined as a dynamic, performative architectural element that shields, breathes, and beautifully defines a contemporary family dwelling.
