Old Silver Amulet from Karnataka, South India

Traditionally worn with a silver chain or thread, this amulet was believed to protect the wearer and to ward off evil. One end of the amulet is a tubular section which screws out for sacred objects/texts to be placed inside.

A beautiful piece with visible signs of wear and age.

Worn and adorned as an integral part of everyday life, it is just beautiful to see these pieces today. The tradition of melting the old for new, makes old silver jewellery increasingly difficult to find.
