This exceptional commemorative banknote was issued by the Banque de la République du Burundi to mark 50 years of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). At 400×288 mm, it is officially the largest legal tender banknote ever printed.

Obverse features the African “Big Five” (elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, buffalo), giraffe, and bird species—symbolizing biodiversity and the impact of CITES.
Reverse includes Burundi’s Presidential Palace, flag, dancers, coat of arms, the southernmost source of the Nile River, and intricate traditional motifs.
