"Think the most expensive part of a Tanjore painting is the gold? Think again."

Most people think "More Gold = Better Quality." They look for shiny surfaces and assume it's a masterpiece

The Reality: Anyone can stick gold foil. The real mastery is in the Muck Work (the 3D embossing). If the base work is sloppy, the gold will only highlight the flaws.

The Pro Secret: Authentic Tanjore art is about the Lakshana (divine features) of the deity. A painting with perfect gold but "angry" or disproportionate eyes is considered incomplete in the traditional sense.

In my upcoming Masterclass on April 15th, we are going beyond the surface. I’m teaching you:

✅ The secret to crack-free, smooth muck work.

✅ How to achieve that perfect 3D depth.

✅ The traditional techniques that separate a hobbyist from a Master Artist.

Between the paint, the brushes, and the baby toys
life is a masterpiece in progress. Perfection is a myth, but presence is a gift. Keep showing up for your dreams, even in the quiet gaps of the day.

Why I insist my students make their own Tanjore boards from scratch...”

Longevity: A hand-prepped board lasts for generations without cracking.

Connection: You understand the "breath" of the materials before the first drop of paint touches the surface.

Autonomy: You aren't dependent on shop-bought boards that might lack quality.

True art is about the journey, not just the destination. Ready to learn the authentic way? DM for workshop details! ✨

In traditional Tanjore painting, the use of poster colors (specifically high-quality, opaque gouache or poster paints) serves a very specific structural and aesthetic purpose that differs from other Indian art forms like Mysore painting or Kerala murals.
While the "gold" is the star of the show, poster colors are the workhorses that make the piece pop. Here is why they are used:

1. High Opacity and Flat Finish

2. Traditional "Vivid" Color Palette

3. Ability to Blend and Shade

4. Compatibility with the Gesso Base

5. Ease of Detailing

Behind every intricate Tanjore painting is a process that requires both patience and the right tools. Today, I’m sharing a glimpse into the final stage: framing.

To ensure that the heavy 22k gold leaf and gemstone work stay securely in place, a reliable heavy-duty wooden stapler (like this Miles TP-10) is my go-to. It provides the strength needed to secure the artwork to the frame, preserving its beauty for generations.

"Framing day at the studio! 🖼️ This heavy-duty tool is essential for giving my Tanjore paintings the sturdy finish they deserve. What’s an 'unusual' tool you can't live without in your craft?

There is a unique peace that comes from painting the Divine Mother. This Lalita Tripura Sundari Tanjore painting is a labor of love and devotion, meticulously crafted using traditional techniques and authentic 22K gold foil.

In this piece, we’ve focused on the fine details of her Alamkara (adornments) and the classical seating, ensuring that every element aligns with the spiritual essence of Hindu iconography.

Highlights of this Piece:
Authentic Craftsmanship: Traditional Gesso work and embossed gold leafing.

Symbolic Detail: Featuring her signature sugarcane bow and floral arrows.

Artistic Precision: Hand-painted features that capture a serene, meditative expression.

Whether you are looking to bring this auspicious energy into your home or want to learn the art yourself, stay tuned for our upcoming masterclasses at Sharbha Atelier.
