Traditional Craft of Tokoname Ware
Seaweed-Wrapped Glaze (Mo-gake Glaze)
Koamamo(Eelgrass) is wrapped around the clay body and then the piece is fired. The salt contained in the koamamo causes only the areas that touch the clay surface to turn a scarlet color during firing.
This is one of the traditional techniques found only in pottery-producing regions that face the sea, such as Tokoname. Though simple, it produces a deeply expressive and distinctive effect.
The key point of this technique lies in how the seaweed is wrapped around the clay body. It must be tied in such a way that it does not fall off before the temperature at which ash adheres to the surface of the clay is reached, which requires careful ingenuity.

This teapot made by Katayama Hakusan, a practitioner of this technique.
Not only is the teapot itself superb in craftsmanship, but the expression created by the Mo-gake makes it an especially remarkable piece.
