Round Kumiko panel featuring a rare, antique maru-obi. Whereas regular obi are usually 30cm wide with a plain back, this one is made from 60cm wide fabric which has been folded in half and stitched together. This opens up more design possibilities and I thought it would be perfect for finally making a circular panel, which I have wanted to do for a long time. I love the idea of giving these beautiful fabrics new life and purpose in a world where kimonos are no longer often worn. I just hope I can do them justice. #組子細工

For this year’s annual pop up shop I will offer a slightly updated version of my square Asa-no-ha kumiko lamps. It is now available in a low or tall version and as always, the plug can easily be changed to make it suitable for use outside of Japan. It’s been a popular souvenir amongst the expat community in Yokohama. Size of low lamp is 20cm tall and 22cm wide. Tall lamp is 30cm tall and 20cm wide. #組子細工

The last few weeks have been very busy as I’ve prepared for the upcoming pop up shop in May. I’ve just finished a batch of three kumiko patterned lamps, which are a slightly updated version of a previous design. I will post further details regarding the pop up in the near future. In the meantime, if you’re interested in any of my works, please send me a message! #組子細工

The start of 2026 has been very busy, with a new lamp design and now also a new wall panel completed. The main feature of this design is the star shaped Rindo pattern, which makes a circular formation when used repeatedly over a larger surface. The flower pattern on the upper left is made by a technique known as kerf-bending, something I have wanted to do for a long time. The third pattern featured is the Yae Asanoha, which is probably my favourite. Size is 70x37 cm. #組子細工

During the COVID lockdown in Australia, I started carving spoons and wooden cups as a way to pass time. After moving to Japan i redirected my focus on learning Kumiko and I hardly ever found the time to carve anymore. On a recent trip to Sweden to visit my family, I once again found myself with a pot of coffee, a knife and a piece of wood. Clearly the last four years in Japan has influenced me, since instead of whittling yet another spoon I found myself with a pair of chopstick rests. #箸置き #木職人

Kumiko serving trays are finally ready. I had originally hoped to have these ready by Christmas last year, but other job commitments had to take priority. I’m really happy with how they turned out and I think they will make a unique present or souvenir from Japan. The acrylic panel can be removed from the tray for easy washing. It is scratch resistant and won’t shatter if dropped. Available in three designs. Size is 36cm x 22cm. #組子細工 #組子

My latest panel, featuring Mt Fuji. I have wanted to try to make this design for a long time, but other things kept getting in the way. I often get requests for Fuji themed panels, usually from expats who want to bring them back to their home country at the end of their stay. The aim was to make a contemporary interpretation of an old technique, which can fit with a modern home decor. #組子細工

A hexagonal kumiko box I made earlier this year, featuring the Yae-asanoha and Goma pattern. Box is made from White Oak, kumiko from Mahogany. I don’t often get to work with Oak since I’m at the mercy of hardware stores and hobby supply shops for timber. This board has been sitting in a cupboard for years, waiting for the right project. #組子細工

Round lamp made with washi paper, which has dried Maple leaves embedded in it. It’s a very different design compared to my usual kumiko lamps, but I wanted to showcase the paper without any distractions. The cylindrical shape was obviously more complicated to make than a square frame, but I think it looks great and was well worth the extra effort. This type of paper is not common and I may not be able to get another sheet again. It sold within the first hour of the and it does seem very fitting that the customer is from Canada 🍁🇨🇦
