Did you know Tsavo is the largest national park in Kenya?

The devastating 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Kumamoto, Japan, has once again reminded the world how powerful and unpredictable our planet can be. But have you ever wondered what actually causes an earthquake?

The Earth may look solid beneath our feet, but its outer layer is made up of gigantic pieces called tectonic plates. These plates are constantly moving, although very slowly—usually only a few centimetres each year.

Sometimes these plates collide, pull apart, or grind against each other. Their rough edges can become stuck while the plates continue trying to move. Over time, enormous pressure builds beneath the surface. When that pressure becomes too great, the rocks suddenly break or slip along a fault line, releasing a tremendous amount of energy. That energy travels through the ground as seismic waves, causing the shaking we call an earthquake.

Japan experiences so many earthquakes because it lies where several tectonic plates meet. It sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most active seismic zones, where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common.

Scientists can identify areas that are more likely to experience earthquakes and can even provide a few seconds of early warning using advanced monitoring systems. However, they still cannot predict the exact day, time, or location when an earthquake will occur.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of earthquakes happen around the world. Most are too small to be noticed, but the strongest ones can reshape landscapes and change lives in an instant.

The next time you hear about an earthquake—whether in Japan, Turkey, Chile, or anywhere else—remember that it all begins deep beneath our feet, where the Earth's tectonic plates are constantly on the move.

Nestled in the cool highlands of Nyahururu, Laikipia University-KE is today one of Kenya's respected public universities. Yet few people know that its journey began nearly a century ago and has passed through several remarkable transformations before becoming the institution we know today.

The story starts in April 1929 when British colonial farmer and educationist William Thomas Alfred Levet established a primary school on his expansive farm. During the colonial era, the school was exclusively for white children, reflecting the segregation policies of the time.

In 1959, the property changed ownership, and in 1965 it was acquired by Kenya's Ministry of Agriculture. The institution was transformed into the Thomson Falls Large-Scale Farmers Training College, where it trained farmers in modern agricultural practices to support the country's growing agricultural sector.

Another major transformation came in October 1979 when it became the Animal Husbandry and Industry Training Institute (AHITI). The institute specialized in training animal health professionals, helping strengthen Kenya's livestock industry.

By 1988, the institution had been converted into Laikipia Teachers Training College. Just two years later, in July 1990, it became a campus of Egerton University. This was part of the government's effort to accommodate the increased number of students joining universities following the introduction of the double intake system. During this period, the campus became well known for producing graduate teachers and offering Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts programmes.

As student enrolment and academic programmes expanded, the institution was elevated to Laikipia University College in 2011 as a constituent college of Egerton University. Finally, on 19 February 2013, then President Mwai Kibaki awarded it a university charter, officially making it an independent public university in Kenya.

Today, Laikipia University offers programmes in education, business, agriculture, science, technology, humanities, communication, criminology, psychology and many other fields. Thousands of students from across Kenya and beyond study in its serene environment, while the university continues to promote research, innovation and community development.

From a colonial primary school to a modern centre of higher learning, Laikipia University's history mirrors Kenya's own journey of transformation, resilience and progress.

Did you know? Before becoming a university, the institution served as a farmers' training college, an animal health institute and a teachers' training college—making it one of the few Kenyan universities with such a diverse educational heritage.
